Surfing and Cycling the Camino Del Norte

Time of past OR future Camino
Walked Camino Frances 2011, Cycled same in 2009
Hola, I am from San Diego, California and have this crazy idea of cycling the Camino Del Norte starting in France and then stopping to surf along the way. I've cycled and walked the Camino Frances on two occasions. My rough plan is to start in March or April of 2013 in France on the Camino Norte.

What I am seeking is any experience / advice on the best villages to stop and surf, as well as surf board rental and any other information. Furthermore, I do a lot of stand up paddling as well and have an even crazier idea of paddling the entire coastline of Spain either on this trip or at some point in the near future.

Anyway, any feedback is mucho appreciated. Gracias, Evan from San Diego

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Hi Evan
more off a baby-boomer myself but my daughter and her boyfriend have surfed in that area and say the best is to be found higher up in France,I have driven down that coast and saw many surfers from up above Bordeaux to all the way down to St Jean-de-Luz-good quite roads lots of sand dune areas and proper camp sites also saw quite a few board hire shops, not sure if they are open early in the year?
I have walked the Norte and the most used surfing area was San-Sebastian with its horse shoe bay also its man made bay used by lots of young surfers using short boards.
I walked this coast in Sept/Oct last year and have to say did not see many Surfers elsewhere

Hi Evan, as mentioned around san sebastian is a good place, i remember seeing a couple of surf schools around somo before the ferry crossing to santander and in a place called Salinas about 6km after Aviles. There is plenty of other places to surf, from the two caminos i have walked along that route i have always seen somebody in the water with a board, wether it is in the basque country, cantabria or asturias. If i had to name other places where you could hire boards i would take a guess at islares, santander, laredo, santona, comillas, san vincente de la barquerra, llanes, poo de playa, riabadsella, la Isla, Gijon, cavadeo, luarca, navia, tapia and lots of other little places whose names i cant remember.
