Walking the Camino Portugues in March

I walked the Camino Frances several years ago and have decided - at quite short notice - to tackle the Camino Portugues. I will be walking with a friend and we intend to commence in early March. No doubt we should expect plenty of rain? Also, we are presuming/hoping that hotels/pensions will all be open by then? Any comment or advice would be appreciated.

I don't know if you're starting from Porto or Lisbon or somewhere else, but I have walked from Lisbon to Porto, and I'd say that since none of the private places I stayed in are camino-dependent, they should all be open. There are no albergues south of Porto, but enough "pensoes" or "residenciais" that are usually in the 18-25 E range.

Try the John Brierly guide. I walked the Camino Portugues in Mar/APr 08 and found the book to be very useful. Distances are quite reasonable and you can complete that section in 1 1/2 weeks quite easily but do take time out to visit all the historic places on the way.

Based on what I've read in the Brierley guide, I'm figuring 13 days walking (at my slow pace), but planning numerous one day (or longer) stops, spending about a month between Porto and Santiago. I'll be leaving from Porto in mid April.

The Michelin Galicia map (571 Regional Espagne) also covers from Porto north.

I started from Porto last year on March 8th first stop Vila do Condo then went central route. We had rain just about everyday hard at times but loved it anyway. Met wonderful people along the way and we just took the rain in stride. When we saw the sun it was a blessing. Going back again thinking Primitivo unless it’s to cold and rainy. I hear many of the albergues might be closed in March. If that’s the case its Portugues Coastal. Hope this helps, Joe
