Following other responses - 1. Halifax Clarity has a good app which shows pending and older transactions which means you can track your expenditure. 2. Avoid Santander ATMs - charge 5 euros to use their machines. Abanca are the best!
I used cash + cc. If you have time a Halifax Clarity card is worth getting as there are no additional transaction or atm fees to pay. Last year many places such as restaurants, etc accepted Cc + i used it to pay for albergues via Booking. A good bank to use is Abanca which has branches in large...
For the British. I had a halifax clarity card which had no fees on ATM transactions or purchases + the rate was good. The ATM I always used for cash was Abanca - which also didn't add any transaction charges - also the case for other non EU visitors.
I remember walking through the wood and enjoyed the peace and quiet until I came across the quirky rest stop with music. I walked straight on as it seemed quite incongruous in this setting. What may seem appealing to a pilgrim/tourist visiting once and moving on, may be viewed quite differently...
I walked the camno frances solo the whole way allowing me to pause where and whe n I wanted including nearly a week in Leon. This would have made meeting up with a "family" from the start difficult if not impossible but I preferred it - certainly less stressful. Being alone you could decide...
Last year I had 4 nights in Santiago end of June (long days, blue skies and sunshine)
I took a day trip by bus to Finisterre- which gave me more than enough time to arrive, walk to the lighthouse, back, lunch and bus back to Santiago. There isn't much to do in town (especially if its...
I would label myself a introvert and walked the camino frances from mid May to end of June last year. Looking for solitude was relatively easy from SJPP TO Saria (after saria it can get busy). You will encounter people on the way but there is no need to feel you must be part of a "family" it is...
I purchased:
The Reverend Sandy Brown
Camino de Santiago: Camino Frances: Guide and map book - includes Finisterre finish (Cicerone Guides
This included a detailed guide + pocket sized atlas split into about 34 stages - giving maps elevation profiles for each stage. I left the guide at home but...
The one thing if would change is having a single route for cyclists and walkers.
I agree and good you said it. There is a whole network of rural roads which could form the basis of a cycle route. With the increase in cyclists and walkers on the camino this would be a sensible development.
Looks a bit like the other film. As a film (and entertainment) to maintain interest, it needs to include a range of events that would probably not happen to ordinary mortals (like me). imo this will be its downfall. I enjoyed doing the camino ( a very personsl experience) though I don't think my...
I did the camino frances 17/5/23 to 30/6/23. First time but ( except for the final 100km) never found it particularly over crowded - and it was good to meet some people on the way anyway.. Weather wise it was good - warm enough at night not to need a sleeping bag, Out in the rain to get drenched...
Excellent review. IMO The Way is no more than a film - to maintain interest it has got to have some ridiculous events about every 10 to 15 minutes. I enjoyed the camino but would have avoided these characters like the plague.
Burgos - in addition to the cathedral I visited the excellent museum of human evolution which is based around the Neanderthal discoveries found at Atapurca which is also on the camino (before burgos) and the excavations can be visited. In walking distance from the centre of burgos is Covento de...
I didn't take any music as the peace and quiet of the camino (+ the sound of the birdsong) was one of the best things about it. Obviously if people want to take their own buds and playlists that is a personal thing but I would feel you are missing something better.
That was Leon and as my local friends said the sign is there for a purpose - ie group photos etc and not as somewhere to park bikes. I have to add the for cyclists to follow the walking route how ever narrow and shout essentially "out of my way I am faster than you" to walkers is an example of...
I would second la laguna - albergue la escuela. Friendly owners. Very small place but so peaceful with beautiful views of the mountains. One of my favourite places on the camino frances.
One place that appears to get ignored in Santiago is the Ciudad de Cultura. On a hill to the south west of the city. Accessible by bus (although this stops at 1.30pm on a Saturday). This is a huge modern cultural centre which must have cost a fortune to build but with hardly any visitors (when i...
I am happy to walk without music and would have found it a distraction. Having said that I like the idea of listening to podcasts and will give that a go this summer. As someone else said I also fail to understand why some people think it is acceptable to share their own music (heard pop rather...
