I had one of my best Camino days and was so excited to tell someone, anyone, about it and I ran into a woman I would walk with sometimes (we walked at different paces but enjoyed chatting). I started to tell her all about it and she was smiling and happy for me but then got very upset. Turns out...
I’m an Atlanta Chapter coordinator. The REI’s here do camino classes and both of the presenters (Tom or Fred, depending on the store) have walked multiple caminos. Our chapter also does a class that is intended to be a follow up to theirs. If you in the Atlanta metro feel free to join us at our...
The town that my grandfather’s family hail from are examples of this phenomenon. It is no surprise, if you visit the pueblo there is nothing, other than family history, to keep a person of any age there. It has become a place to visit, not a place to live.
Heads up- I was going to buy tickets for the "Pity & Terror" exhibition, unfortunately it ends September 4th. If you want to see it don't wait.
Of course the Guernica will still be there, but this special exhibition will have end before our trip...
@SeaHorse You are spot on. Move off the established routes and it becomes more and more apparent. Of the three towns I know I have family history (La Redonda, Cerallbo, & Sobredillo) only Cerallbo is viable, and it is just barely so. Everyone has moved to Salamanca or Valladolid (or Madrid or...
I've seen lots of kids playing on the equipment in Salamanca and Sevilla. My kids have joined in the fun, too. *Full disclosure, we were visiting family, not walking a Camino* My oldest still remembers her little sister playing with the locals in Sevillla. The youngest only remembers the stories...
I always had some cured meat and bread in my backpack. Usually some hard cheese as well, same as at home. But the two things I had on the Camino that I wouldn't necessarily have here were; 1) A small (plastic, not glass) bottle of olive oil, 2) A water bottle full of olives.
The water bottle...
Hi all- I'm trying to find a thread from a while back. Someone had posted how they made a replica of a mile post/distance marker. I've search using several different key words with no luck. If anyone has it bookmarked would you please post a link. Thank you in advance!
Most U.S. Cars show both MPH & km/h. They have since the 1980s, it just wasn't consistent. The first car I had with the dual markings was a 1982 Chevy Camaro. On new cars it's all digital, just push the button for the one you want.
However, they dual markings don't do much good. Almost all our...
Like most people I had many moments along the Camino, but two stand out above them all.
The first was in the church at San Juan de Ortega. Something special overcame me inside there. After spending a good bit of time with my walking companions, I bid them 'good bye' while I stayed behind to...
Ten or fifteen years ago in Salamanca I was given the "stink eye" when I asked, ¿Donde esta el baño?, inside a nice restaurant. I received directions and a Spanish lesson. In my defense, in Mexico I always heard 'baño' not 'servicio'.
The other thing I messed up was not really Camino relevant...
I had the same experience. I was always able to get my point across, but had a hard time understanding some people. Unfortunately for me, 25 years of aircraft maintenance and loud hobbies doesn't make it any easier.
As @Donna Sch mentioned, the Spanish (Castilian) spoken in Salamanca is most...
As Sabine mentioned, try La Tienda. tienda.com They may have them, but probably won't be cheap. Just a thought if you haven't found any you like, my other suggestion would be to make friends with a potter. I've got one cazuela I brought back from Spain 10 years ago and probably a dozen more...
Are you reading my mind? I spent last night rationalizing why "this might be handy" or "that could be nice to have". So far I resisted everything but one pair of running shorts. I still have a pile of stuff I need to put away before the temptation gets the better of me.
¡Buen Camino! My...
I addition to what was mentioned above about APOC I'll add that it is a great way to meet others who have walked and want to walk the Camino. For me, I've found walking partners, advice, and new friends.
I leave for Spain in six days and I'm ready to go already. I'd leave tomorrow if I could, but I have to work the next five days. I just want to start, I don't want to read about it anymore, or plan, or talk, or whatever. I just want to start. Sorry, just needed to vent. Now that I have that off...
