After Pazo de Reguengo

Coming out of Monforte, all is relatively smooth until we get to the Pazo de Reguengo. That's this big estate on the LU-P-4112.Screenshot 2017-01-26 15.34.07.webp
After that, the original camino had a left turnoff that went straight and up to Castrotañe and Penelope's house, but that turnoff is not recommended. I think there may be a yellow X, but the mojón is still there.

So, the pilgrim continues up on the LU-P-4112. I do not see an arrow, but I believe this is the current turnoff (google streetview is from 2013, I think). Can people confirm for me that this is where to turn off the asphalt? (the little green and white street sign you can't see says Sao Lourenzo)

But I know it's possible to just stay on the LU-P-4112. You will miss Castrotañe but will soon be back on the Camino. See the yellow arrow on the telephone pole on the left, suggesting that you should have been on the road the whole time. I am in doubt though because when I "google walked" this stretch of the LU-P-4112, I didn't see any yellow arrows between Reguengo and this spot. Any help?

Do you remember going through San Lourenzo or did you stay on the 4112 till this picture below?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I can get you some up to date pics if you want - I live only a couple of miles away.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Hola, Laurie,

The second pic is definitely the official Camino left turn (ca.150mts after entrance to Reguengo estate) but was completely flooded and overgrown (thorns!!!) in 2014, that's why I went further up the LU-P-4112.

Then there was a 90° left turn for San Lourenzo which is your pic no.3 I think. It's a bit distorted due to lenses but I think that's the one. I walked to the houses where I saw "No Trespassing" sign, but all was well. Even say hello to inhabitants and asked for Senora Ingles Penelope and they pointed me further through their estate. I think they knew the state the Camino is in and just allowed me to walk through their courtyard.

After few meters of tarmac (their private) and rough gravel path the way turned into flooded and overgrown path again. I climbed over the stone fence on the left hand side and continued on the pasture to Castrotane. Penelope is easy to find once there because it's the only really inhabited compound there. On the left, four or five houses I'd guess.

If you walk half past this estate there is a (unmarked as I remember) right turn between house on the left and stone wall on the right and that's the Camino. But next day I didn't took it for obvious reason mentioned twice above. I retraced back to LU-P-4112 and the rest is history already discussed in my daily journal ;)

Anyway, here is my GPS track where you can see sharp left turn from LU-P-4112 to Castrotane:

I'm not really sure but I think your pic no.4 is from further up on the LU-P-4112. Is it the turn off into Pineiro with its praised fountain???
(Can see it here just before KM 2: https://www.endomondo.com/users/16690154/workouts/379652533)
Kinky, you absolutely have to go back. Based on your endomondo track, you missed the beautiful green field-green tunnel stretch after Piñeiro. That was where I almost fell backwards into a sea of mud. Had I fallen, like a turtle, I would have been unable to get myself up again. But it is beautiful, and now the route from Piñeiro to Camiño Grande is much improved.

You, Charrito, and I will make a dynamic trio on the Invierno.

Can't help with this one, I'm afraid, as - if you remember - I worked out an alternative route (which you have in the guide). I walked from Monforte de Lemos (having started the stage in A Pobra do Brollón) to Escairón (Vilasante), stayed overnight in the excellent Hotel O Ruso, then carried on the following day and picked up the Camino again at Diomondi, before going down towards Belesar.

Yes, I missed that part. I thought to myself if the route down at Reguengo is flooded and overgrown it would be even worse after Piñeiro (warning in the guide) so I stayed on the road all the way to Camiño Grande. Not unusual for me to invent new parts of Caminos ;)

Hi, Pablo,
Wow, that would be great. I would also appreciate any updates if you feel like walking that stretch! Buen camino, Laurie

Pictures today... 27 Jan 17.
The Mojon has been moved up the hill to the road turn off.... see pics below. Meanwhile Electricity poles clearly marked to direct you on up the hill towards it. The narrow path that was formerly signposted is very overgrown currently, and likely to be impassable in Spring, Summer.

Note* Easiest way to get to Penelope's place is to go left off the Camino at the junction before, where the previous Mojon is. Follow the LU P 4106 for 0.6 kms and then follow the Castrotane road sign turning to the right for another 0.3 kms.

I will be walking the parts of the Invierno training for my VDLP in April, so happy to send you any updates in due course. Please pm me with your contact details.

Cheers
Paul

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
Thanks a million for that. Now that the mojón has been moved, I'll bet this path will become impassable. I was told that going through San Lourenzo, you will also get very close to Penelope's -- would you know how to describe that for the guide?

And I'll pm you with my email address. Buen camino, Laurie

You can't really miss Penelope's houses from San Lourenzo because it's almost all the way straight and most of the time you see Pazo de Reguengo down to the left.

What Pablo posted is actually the way I took. You can see it clearly in my GPS track: https://www.endomondo.com/users/16690154/workouts/379015045 From left turn for San Lourenzo (with now relocated mojon) it's 400/450mts to Penelope's house. I think there is one tractor path that veers up to the right but you should stay on the "main" path and you'll recognise her houses as this:
1018-El Piso house (Castrotane, 26.07.14).webp

BUT as Pablo already mentioned there's shorter way to Penelope. At the major cross-roads before Pazo de Reguengo you are walking on LU-P-3204 and Camino cross LU-P-4106 to continue straight on LU-P-4112. If you turn left on LU-P-4106 ( https://www.google.si/maps/@42.5398...4!1sg-X78Rh5uYegUHFPebMYCg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) and take 2nd right turn on tarmac road (after this house: https://www.google.si/maps/@42.5381...4!1soM1CYtmjXQGGh_5Ze2ZBVA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) you will come up this road:
1016-view from El Piso house (Castrotane, 26.07.14).webp

And see the Penelope's house from different side:
1017-El Piso house (Castrotane, 26.07.14).webp

Kinky, thanks for all of that. I will work on incorporating something specific about getting to Penelope's house. But I don't want to put in too many options. Do you think that the San Lourenzo way is acceptable, even though it is longer than the road route you describe?

Haha, of course it's acceptable. Just remember how many times on different Caminos you asked yourself why this by-pass and that detour where there is clearly more straight option ;)
Well I guess sometimes routes are marked in this zig-zag way for security reasons, sometimes to visit a church or ruins etc. In the case of Castrotane I really can't see a reason why doing such a loop apart from a peek into Pazo de Reguengo through closed driveway doors... But it's not that much longer if you go to Penelope on the marked path.

Hi all, i hope to be helpful for his topic posting the track that i've followed during my camino de invierno, last january. Like i did after descending from Monte de Faro, i've just followed the arrows/mojones founded on the trail and, as you can see from the track, a couple of times i've had the feeling of walking circles, going backwards...This part of the stage, anyway, is really amazing, but difficult during or after rain.

Thanks, chinasky, looks like you found the way through Sao Lourenzo without difficulty. I'm kind of surprised you didn't see Penelope's house. I remember there was a shell tile prominently pasted into the side of the house, but beyond that my memory is a little fuzzy. Here's her website. http://www.galiciaholidayrentals.com/

But it doesn't really matter -- the key thing is that you didn't go through the impassably brambly muddy turnoff from Pazo de Reguengo and also found your way to Piñeiro, Camiño Grande, and beyond!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Yes, i've found the way without any problems and it has been a really nice and easy walk that day.
