Ancient Varieties of Trees Planted Along Pilgrimage Routes in France

I was just reading the aucoeurdechemins.org website in preparation for another pilgrimage and learned something delightful that others might be interested in.

I discovered there, that some of the pelerins, in cooperation with the local municipalities, have been planting small "micro-vergers" along various pilgrimage routes in France since 2014.

So far they have planted 307 trees in 56 communities in groups of 3, 5 and 15 trees!! They try to use the ancient varieties that are local to each area. And they have planted some trees along each route (Tours, Vezelay, Le Puy, Arles et Piémont). Their site has a map where trees have been planted. Go HERE to see a map of where the trees have been planted

What a marvellous, thoughtful, and generous way to give back to les chemins!! Huge congratulations to those responsible!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Absolutely magic! Couldn't albergues etc along the Frances issue a tree per pilgrim with appropriate instructions? I know, I know, more work for
those running accommodation but a worthy cause nevertheless and could involve local people and so strengthen bond between them and the pilgies!

I saw a few of those fruit trees at the end of my Le Puy trek this spring. Be a few years before fruit will be there, but I was charmed by it.
