Bayonne hotel booking

My daughter and I arrive at Biarritz at 9:30PM on July 25th. I have read the previous threads that recommend to stay at hotel Monte Carlo across from train station at Bayonne. My question is how I can book the hotel in advance? It does not seem that we can book on their website. I had send an inquiry through their contact form (in English) but they have not responded. If we walk in that late at night, is there any chance we can get a room?

About the bus from Biarritz to Bayonne: how late does it run? Do we just get the ticket at the station when we arrive at the airport?

If we want to spend a couple hours in Bayonne before heading to SJPDP, What would you recommend to do? We like beautiful landscape, local cultures and food. I will consider to stay one more night.

Where to stay in SJPDP? We like simple and clean accommodation and nice people, and we don't mind to share bathroom.

Hi MichelleWT. I don’t know about the Hotel Monte Carlo in Bayonne. However, my friend and I have booked the Hotel Cote Basque on booking.com. It is 100 metres from the Bayonne Train Station. You could also try booking.com for accommodation in SJPdP. If you do a search on this forum for accommodation in SJPdP you will get plenty of good suggestions from Forum members. Buen Camino!

I have hotel accommodation booked in Bayonne for 26th August. I received a notice warning me that the reception desk closes at 7pm. It’s not the hotel you mentioned but that could be typical so you may need to make arrangements even with a booking. I used booking.com.

It seems that they are fully booked on 25 - 26 July and other dates. I found one very expensive room available there, €127 a night for a double room. I think you can do better than that.

@MichelleWT, the website of the Hotel Monte Carlo in Bayonne says that their prices range from 30 € to 89 €, except during the Fêtes de Bayonne.

The festival Fêtes de Bayonne takes place from 24 July to 28 July 2019, so demand for hotel rooms and prices for your arrival date will be higher than usual.

I’ve stayed at Hotel Cote Basque twice now and thoroughly recommend it: perfect location, friendly staff and spotlessly clean. Really lovely rooms too.

A local bus, (15-20 mins) from Biarritz airport, drops you in downtown Biarritz, a block or so from
Le Petit Hotel.
The hotel is also a block fm the beach where there are lovely walks.
From close by another local bus departs to the Bayonne Railway Station. Takes about 20 mins to get there and costs 1E.
I find I have plenty of time for a morning stroll along the coast before catching the bus to Bayonne Station to catch the little valley rattler train to St Jean.

If you consider staying the night in Biarritz, you greatly expand the pool of options. Biarritz and Bayonne are kind of overlapping towns, so not too far apart to complicate your life.

You could have a pleasant morning walk on the beach, then a stroll around Bayonne before catching your ride to SJPDP.

Bayonne was an important river-coastal port back in the day. There's a Basque museum not far from the station - but over the river.

If you’re in Bayonne at lunchtime, the scene at the restaurants around the university is a delightful madhouse.

I’ve yet to explore Biarritz but have found Bayonne just right for decompression. Riverside walks and quite a variety of streetscapes. I did a daytrip to the resort town of St Jean de Luz that’s very much worth the time and effort.

Are you sure this will be the case when the OP arrives on 25 July ? An earlier quote from @biarritzdon has this to say about the festival Fêtes de Bayonne that takes place from 24 July to 28 July 2019 this year:

The fete in Bayonne [...]: be ready for huge crowds and a lack of places to stay. This event is much like San Fermin with bull running, music, free flowing beer and much merriment.​

Much of the town of Bayonne (but not the train station) will be within a festival perimeter (see area marked below). Access is free on Wednesday 24 July and Thursday 25 July but from Friday to Sunday 26-28 July 2019, visitors will have to pay a one time entry fee of 8 € and wear a bracelet.


The numbers 1-10 mark the entry points to the designated festival area. Entry number 1 is close to the Bayonne train station.

Thank you Kathar1na and Biarritzdon for alerting the OP and others to this festival. It could be a very interesting experience if you had time to explore before travelling to SJPdP. However, looks as though accommodation will be more of a challenge to secure and at a much higher cost.

If you plan to stay in Bayonne during the fetes take white clothing and expect to have a very late night... Special trains run through the night to Biarritz and elsewhere
