None-will be first one.Want to do 100-150 km Camino in late November, 2019
Hi. Name is Jeff and I Just joined forum today. Fascinating reading so far. Question...….I want to start with a shorter route ( around the 100k mark ) and will be doing it in late November.
Recommendations please for best route for beginning walker ?

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I'd recommend the Camino Ingles from Ferrol. About 116km. Quite varied scenery - starting in a sea port then climbing fairly gently. A few interesting historic towns and villages along the way. A few steep but short hills but mostly easy walking. And you get the satisfaction of walking a "full" Camino from start to finish.

Excellent. Thank you.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Hello, Jeff, and a warm welcome to the Forum.:)

Here are two links which also may be of help as you begin:
Canadian Company of Pilgrims
American Pilgrims on Camino's FAQs about a camino pilgrimage

The good news is, you are in a forum with a wonderful group of people. Most are here to help people like you to achieve their pilgrimage goals. We can offer you encouragement, knowledge, and point you in the direction that will help you help yourself.

My suggestion to start is this:
  1. Take a deep breath. Write down in large letters the reasons why you want to go on Camino. Place that piece of paper where you can see it every day. That way, if anxieties and fears threaten to overwhelm you as you plan, you can just breath, read what you have written, and focus on those reasons until the negative stuff fades.
  2. Make a list of questions and concerns that you have.
  3. Go to the Search Engine at the top of the Forum pages.
  4. Enter the words or phrase that you want more information about. You will get a huge amount of information to explore.
  5. If you find that you need help with anything, post a new thread so that your question or concern can be readily seen. If you post a question within someone else's thread, you won't receive as big of a response.
  6. Remember that perfect timing as it relates to how you feel, scheduling, and day to day life issues, seldom align themselves perfectly. If one waits for such to occur, doing something like a pilgrimage will always be in danger of taking a back seat while you wait for that perfect alignment to happen.

Ideal pocket guides for during and after your Camino. Each weighs just 40g (1.4 oz).

First time? From Sarria no doubt
Buen Camino!
(it will be quiet)

Hi @Herm. Walk from Sarria. Plenty of accommodation, plenty of cafes and rest-stops - oh, and plenty of weather... Expect rain, perhaps snow: enjoy sunshine when it comes your way. Take an umbrella.

The Camino Frances from Sarria will still have plenty of fellow travellers at that time of year. The Ingles and the Portuguese routes will be quieter but in that North western corner of Spain with its mild, wet Atlantic Maritime climate: take an umbrella ;)

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome Dave. I already feel better and more resolute about my decision to take this journey.

If it’s solitude you’re after, do the Ingles. I walked it in November last year and thought I saw one other walker.

Someone helpfully checked the pilgrim office records for me and said there were about ten pilgrims per day arriving on the Ingles at the time.

Of course, if solitude is so important, perhaps you could walk other than on a recognised route? Or go on retreat?

Welcome. Just for background information, here is a website that shows most of the routes in Spain, converging on Santiago, so you can see what your options are. For a beginner with a late November start, I'd definitely recommend the Camino Frances from Sarria. You will have plenty of opportunity to be alone or with a few companions, as you choose.

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the Forum. Lots of good advice already above. I would just add a couple of things......

Any reason you only want to walk 100 kms? The only reason I ask, is that it will all be over fairly quickly for you and the chances are you'll wish you had walked further ;)

Do be aware that walking the Camino for many people is more addictive that 'crack'!
If you find yourself nearing Santiago and already thinking about your next one.......well, don't say we didn't warn you.

As for the Route. From Sarria is a great introduction. It has it all. Can just be a little busy but that can add to experience in a positive way too. Have covered that section three times so far and always enjoy it. Though it always feels like the 'home straight' and a little bittersweet if you have started much further out....... Like "it's all over soon"

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Thanks for the information, and in such a comical format. Nice way to start a sunday morning:) I can only get a couple weeks maximum off work so I need a shorter route, or way longer legs:)
I do have an addictive personality so no doubt I will do it more than once, and hopefully a longer route some day, either after I get fired or retire-whatever comes first
