Budget ways to get from Santiago city to airport

Hi everyone, hope all is good with you. After his very first Camino Francés my son is heading from central Santiago to the Airport at 8.00am on Friday morning.

He’s Looking for advice on the best budget ways for do this.
Can’t see a bus route ( although there MUST be one ) and no BlaBla car available as yet . Any ideas ?

Yes, there is a bus that goes from Santiago to the airport and has a couple of stops in town. I think it is bus 6A.

The cab is a set fare to the airport. I would call the cab the night before and let them know when he wants to be picked up.

I’ve seen a few conflicting comments about where the bus stop is in central Santiago ( other than the Bus station on the timetable ) .
Would you know ?

To chime in -

- yes, the 6A. Took it myself. One stop is not *in* the new bus/train station, but on the main road just outside the pedestrian bridge there. Clearly marked, about a 2km walk (mostly downhill) from the Catedral. Google Maps got me there just fine, once I got out of the center of the old city. Seemed to be true to schedule.

I caught the 8 am bus to the airport on 13 October and it was standing room only. Might be worth aiming for an earlier bus than you strictly need in time for flight checkin, in case there is no room on the first bus that comes along.

Hah, i remember being in Santiago twice and having the problem of finding the bus schedule twice as well. For a information that relevant to thousands of people it is remarkably well hidden.

But once you find the relevant bus stop it's dead simple.

I got on the bus the other side of the market. simple and easy. 1Euro

I have found over the years that sharing a taxi with one or two other people, all heading to the airport, produces the best value for time and money invested. Spending 7 - 8 Euros to share a taxi to the airport is a bargain compared to an upset stomach when one cannot get on an overcrowded bus.

Then again, at my age time is more important than money - within reason.

If you do not avail yourself of a taxi, I recommend planning to take the first or second next earlier bus - just in case. Do not plan it too tight. The airplane waits for no mortal.

I would suggest walking. From memory (!) it took me about three hours - just follow the Camino arrows in reverse and then peel off and follow the Airport signs from La Coruna. I did it in the evening for an early morning flight and then snoozed at the airport - I found it easier that the potential stress of an early morning journey from SdC and saved on a night in an Albergue. Personally I liked the symmetry and consistency - I walked solo into Spain and I walked out solo again five weeks later. But that's me! ;-)

On my first two Caminos I always took the bus to the airport from the old, rather dirty bus station and walked there from my hotel at daybreak as my Ryanair flight to Madrid was always quite early. Another year I stayed at a hotel near the airport the night before my flight as there was a bus stop in front of the hotel. It was a shock after waiting to find out the bus was entirely full! Thankfully they quickly arranged a second bus and it showed up 15 minutes later...whew.
Another time I arranged for a taxi to the airport for €22 and it worked the best. Last spring I took the high speed train from Santiago back to Madrid, which worked well, too, and I purchased the ticket online a few weeks ahead.
I have never used blablacar or hitchhiked.
