I'm leaving tomorrow for the Sanabres!

Hi all!

Once again I am heading back to Spain; this time to walk much of the Sanabres with my son; starting in Rionegro del Puente after a few sightseeing days first in Salamanca and Zamora.

I'm hoping for good weather, but I always come prepared and don't worry too much. Predicting weather in the spring is like a "box of chocolates" so not sure what we're going to get. My backpack weighs 12 pounds with rain jacket/pants, a small umbrella and puffy jacket, so I should be all set.

I always get some requests to post on the forum's "Live on the Camino" threads, so will attempt to post daily again and include a few pictures as time permits.

Enjoy…. You guys will enjoy it. It looks like the Sanabrs has become a bit busier each year…but still quiet time available.

It does get very crowded from Ourense (100 km point). We have experience overfull albergue there twice.
The Tapa scene in Ourense is worth a tour of the many bars.

Yes, I chose that route knowing it was not as remote as some of the other options, but still a new and different one for me to walk.

Buen camino! I'm just leaving the albergue in Granja to start the Sanabres after walking from Zamora. Weather pretty good - cold in mornings and evenings, warm and sunny in the afternoon. And the wildflowers are amazing! Quite a lot of people walking (for this route) at the moment.

My daughter and I just arrived in Ourense, having started walking from Puebla Sanabria on Apr 14th. We've gotten to know a few pilgrims that we run into at the albergues.

But guess how many pilgrims we"ve seen on the trail over the last 8 days?
ZERO. Not a SINGLE other walker. We are now in the Grelo Hostal in Ourense (Which I highly recommend, btw).
It is 6 pm and guess how many other people are staying in this entire hostal besides us? TWO. I checked the Xunta Albergue and they have 9 total. There could be bigger groups in private lodging I guess, but I havent seen any obvious candidates out walking around this evening.

So, up till now at least, I would have a hard time calling the Sanabres busy this time of year. Will will report back tomorrow.

Other updates: It's been warm and dry every day the last week and a half. The right bank along the river route into Ourense is barricaded off. We took the left bank until we came to steps up to the roadway bridge. The hot springs/bathes near the Xunta alberque are drained and under construction.

Any advice anout which route we should take out of Ourense tomorrow?

Just out of interest - I left Zamora on 17th of April and have found between 30/40 people walking...which has meant a little bit of a 'bed race' in some of the places with small albergues.
