Here is a map that shows the albergue (along the river) and major oints described bellow

https://www.google.ca/search?q=mapa...8&hl=fr-ca&client=safari#imgrc=8Tp897-zvNOPrM:

Cross the river into Merida, via the Roman bridge or the modern white bridge to the left of the Roman bridge as you face the river. Once on the city side of the river, walk left following the river. There will be a park on your left. In about 500 meters, if you walked across the modern bridge, you will pass by the municipal albergue, a converted mill just below the street.

After the albergue keep walking in the same direction until the round about. On the map, this is on the very left bottom corner. Cross the road here to calle del ferrocarril, the street of the railway.

From there you keep going straight. Look for arrows on the side of the sidewalk. It will take a curve right, When you see the aquaduct on your left, number 8 on the map, you will also notice train tracks. Go undwr them by walking through the tunnel. As you come out on the other side, cross the bridge amd keep going straight.

You will pass one or two round abouts and could be under the impression that you are walking into/towards a highway access. You have a good 2-3 km of this until you pass under intersection where you will notice a special section of the road that is for walkers, cyclists and emergency vehicles. That is where you want to walk, so you no longer face on coming traffic. Keep going straight until you get to the embalse.

Or.. cut cross town doing a bit of siteseeing, aming towards the aquaduct where you will take the tunnel under the train tracks and follow my instructions from there.

I can tell you one spot where the arrows fail - they bring you along the river walk and up to the ancient Roman bridge, but they don't tell you to cross the bridge. I think possibly the stone work may have been cleaned lately.

NB the public albergue is in a mill right on the river, it is almost obscured by trees and very low down, compared to the riverside walk. You can't see it until you are almost upon it. Note that the hiding place of the key is common knowledge, and people seem to come back late and forget to lock the door from the inside, so take special care of your valuables here.

My guidebook warned me that the route out of town was poorly marked, but I didn't find this to be the case, and didn't use a map at all.

I second MikeJS! We actually started our VDLP in Merida...we followed the arrows with no problems! We used the Wise Pilgrim app frequently and also SYates guide found somewhere in the camino forum. We found the VDLP to be fairly well marked! It is such a beautiful path. Enjoy!!
