This French video , part of the series Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris , details the raising of the new roof on Notre Dame Cathedral. The images are splendid.

I was in Paris a couple weeks ago for the first time. I’ve been to France several times but never to Paris.

The last time I was in France it was when she was burning. I was there on a work trip and saw the news and informed the elderly French man making my pizza about it. He and I watched the news and he was just in shock.

It was so nice to be able to go see her nearly back to her former glory. I thought about all that have worked to bring her back and how they will be able to bring their kids and show them what they had done.

It really is quite extraordinary.

It’s heartening to see that there still exist sufficient traditional craftspeople to carry out this reconstruction at quite unbelievable speed.

It’s also heartening to see that those traditional skills are being passed on to a younger generation - an unexpected blessing arising from the fire.

I had the pleasure of hosting a couple of young French touring cyclists last summer, one of whom was a highly skilled carpenter now fully employed in the restoration. All credit to those engaged in the project: the restoration is indeed in safe hands.
