Starting before SJPP

Burgos to Muxia 2016
I am thinking about walking my Camino Frances starting some 150 km (say - a week) before SJPP, in France. Is it much different from walking in Spain? What maps, places would you recommend?

I will be visiting friends in Marseille prior to my Camino. Perhaps I should start from there? I have plenty of time.

Or you can start in St. Palais where two of the French routes come together, and a third from Le Puy joins just shortly afterwards. It is a beautiful walk.
