I will be serving as a Hospitalero in Bercianos from June 1 to June 15 and then would like to spend a few days in Santiago before flying back home.

What is the best bus or train route to go from Bercianos to Santiago? Any idea how long it takes? Times?

Thanks,

dan

I often get the train from Sahagún to León and then the ALSA bus to Santiago (I stay a lot of the year just east of Sahagún). Taxi to Sahagún, arrange the day before, and catch the 0834 train to León (join the meseta skippers!), or the 1743 to Sahagún the evening before. On weekends the morning train leaves Sahagún at 0848. There is no staffed ticket office at Sahagún, just a machine, if it is not working jump on the train and pay on board if the conductor checks, they often don't. From León rail station, arriving around 0920, walk the 3 minutes round to the bus station, turn right out of the main entrance and then right again, straight on to the bus station. In theory it's possible to catch the 0930 bus to Santiago from León, changing at Ponferrada, but the train from Sahagún quite often arrives late so I always book the midday ALSA bus. It's a long haul to Santiago, arriving 2000, but there's a 40 minute wait at Ponferrada to grab refreshments (change of bus). Enjoy your time at Bercianos!

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday there was last year an ALSA bus from Bercianos to León. Departed 0930 (the 0900 from Sahagún rail station carpark), arrived León around 1030. Joining at Bercianos, you can pay on the bus. You will have plenty of time to see if this bus still runs, it has for the last few years. Also, the morning trains from Sahagún stop at Burgo Ranero if it is easier for you to get there from Bercianos, maybe the incoming hospis have a car. No tickets at Burgo Ranero just jump on the train, the station is some way frm the village.

I am serving as a Hospitalara in Bercianos May 1-15. I plan to bus or train from Leon to Sahagun, then walk the next day into Bercianos. I want to see what pilgrims see as they arrive in Bercianos. I am glad to hear that Michael Blankschen had a good experience, I am super excited.
