What i carried into Santiago

Time of past OR future Camino
Norte 17
I used this forum to help me make a lot of my decisions before my camino and wanted to help others who are packing. I walked for two weeks in June from Caudillero to Santiago along the norte. I walked into Santiago carrying (not including what i was wearing):
-shirt, long pants, sweater, socks x2, underwear x3, rain jacket
-sleeping bag
-phone charger, phone
-passport, wallet, pen
-sunscreen, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, moisturiser
-sandals
-muesli bars x2
-choclate
-500ml water bottle
-hat

All up with my one planet 'wing it' pack it was about 5kgs. Some days i would buy an extra water bottle if there was talk of a hot day or a big hill. I didn't use the sandals and would trade them for some lighter flip-flops. All the toiletries were bought in spain but next time i'll find smaller bottles before i go. I was lucky with the weather but could have easily bought warmer clothes along the way if needed. The less the better, lots of pilgrims had sore backs and shoulders from carrying too much, it would be better to post things to santiago if you need them post-camino rather than carry them up those hills.

I had a really good time on the Norte and would recommend it, i never had any trouble finding a bed and never went hungry. Lots of people on this forum suggested starting after Aviles or at least skipping the walk into and out of it and the pilgrims i met all confirmed that this stretch was the worst. I walked about 25kms a day, any faster and you lose contact with all the friends you make. I didn't suffer from blisters but did get some tight calves which resulted in sore achilles, ice and ibuprofen fixed this. Two weeks was enough for me and i'll go back and do another two or three week walk in spain one day.

Oh and i lost almost 5kgs despite drinking lots of beer and eating everything i saw.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
