Why no Stations of Cross in Churches?

I was asked by an Irish Teacher as to why he found no stations of the cross in churches on his present camino.
I have to say I can't remember seeing any walking from St. Jean... Think they were in Pamplona Cathedral.
Maybe wayside crosses are more the spanish tradition?

Just an idle query.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Stations of the Cross are quite common in Germany along the Jakobsweg. I've seen quite a few, both inside churches, and outside along the route. These often have some very interesting art. The outside ones are usually located up some rather steep hill. Sometimes they lead to a chapel at the hilltop.

In France, I think I recall seeing some inside the larger churches and cathedrals.

I have seen them in France and Spain. So many churches are locked in Spain that the sample is smaller than for France, but I suspect they are in all churches.

I recall seeing stations in more modern (18c onwards) than romanesque and mediaeval so you may want to send your teacher back to check this out more thoroughly. The practice is Italian in origin and certainly nigh-universal in France, but it might not be as universal in Spain. Note, as well, that there are regional variations of which to take account.

There are definitely Stations of the Cross on the walls of SdeC Cathedral. I photographed them in May.

Here's a photo of the church in the village after Roncesvalles. You can see the Stations here...I have a photo of another churches with them too.

Thanks for that information... I sent it on to the perplexed Teacher on the Camino.. He told me he had seen some just that day. Many thanks

They are there, in most churches, but sometimes quite unobtrusive / samll / hidden. Remember the BIG stations of the cross take place in Semana Santa in the streets - los pasos, SY
