SIM card or Monthly International Plan with Verizon

@Rick of Rick and Peg said is correct. Newer smartphones have dual physical SIMs - or for iPhones: physical SIM and eSIM. Some carriers offer the eSIM to avoid having to pull out your SIM. So you can have both your US carrier's phone# and a second SIM with your European #: This is what is...

SIM card or Monthly International Plan with Verizon

Get a local SIM from any of the major providers - it works so much better on cellular without WiFi access and remember to bring your passport for the purchase. My Verizon phone had the local SIM from Orange and it worked like a charm. OTOH my T Mobile phone which has free international roaming...

Rain proof gloves necessary in April?

When I fish the wet weather months on the rivers, I use DWR spray on all my outer gear and pack. During the season when it starts to wear off, I tumble them in a low setting dryer and the finish is restored.

The Shoulder Harness System: the first essential component for a good backpack

Thanks @davebugg - very good information. Looking at planning my first camino, I am looking at taking one of my waterproof angling backpacks as I am planning on a fall trip. Since I spey fly fish rivers in the fall and winter months, my choice of pack is for extreme weather conditions - rain...

    Footwear on the plane

When I used to fly a lot internationally (pre-pandemic), I will fly with my comfy lightweight sandals from Under Armor. They are perfect for inflight use with my comfy workout clothes for the long flight. Because the lavatory floors may be wet, I prefer them as I can slip them off when I...

Best Travel Insurance for the Camino Frances

I use Allianz insurance for evacuation & medical coverage for single trips that cover the duration you request. Last time I went to northern British Columbia to fish for steelhead in remote areas that do not have cellular reception, it was $200 for the 2 week duration. Small price to pay for...

Altra Olympus 4 trail shoes - supination vs neutral - break in time needed ?

After reading posts from others who have need for a larger toe box, I ordered a pair of Altra Olympus 4 for an upcoming camino later this fall. Planning on walking my very first camino: Portugues from Tui to Santiago in fall this year - 6-8 days walking.... Questions: 1. How much break in time...

    Training for the Camino

Good thread! We are planning our first camino in fall this year and started some light training. Power walking every weekday 1 mile and on weekends hiking 2-3 miles with light pack (we are not carrying a heavy backpack due to luggage transport services). Just ordered a pair of Altra Olympus 4...

    Deodorant Preferences

ExOfficio antimicrobial under shirt & underwear prevents odors from building and also lets your body breathe. I wear it all the time fly fishing (Spey) on the rivers underneath waders and never have to use deodorant. Plus for travel, they are super light, easy to wash and dries super fast.

    Using a Spanish SIM card

When we bought ours originally in Spain with a passport, we were able to enjoy continued use thru: UK, France, and Italy. The only issue was data speeds varied depending on which country we were in. Can't complain because the T Mobile with US SIM was slower than the Euro SIM....

    Using a Spanish SIM card

This is 100% correct - must bring your passport to buy a SIM card. We were in Spain in 2018 and 2019 and got a Orange & Vodaphone SIM cards. I take 2 phones with me as I normally carry for work and personal: My personal is T Mobile and works relatively good in Europe (albeit slow data speeds)...

Funny you say that - agree Tuscan food is amazing except for the hard pasta which is always undercooked on my American palate....

First camino planning - which to choose from: Sarria, Vigo or Ferrol ?

Ha, yes I know but let's see how the first camino goes - we are brand newbies that are nervous.... Spain is my favorite European country - actually looking into retiring in Spain in a couple of years... OTOH my wife would love to hike Italy as that's her favorite country. At least we both...

    Trail Runners for Custom Orthotics

FOLLOWING: This is a good post! I forgot about how important orthotics are - especially looking at doing a first time camino this fall... Are there any good brands to choose or are they all podiatrist secret brands ? I remember I had ski boot orthotics made over 30 years ago and those cork...
