I am Team Sarong! Last year I used mine as: a towel, headwrap, instant skirt, shawl, scarf, pillow cover, mattress cover, and one time as an extra layer inside my sleeping bag liner. -

My backpacks range from 28L to 32L, depending on which route I'm walking. My daypack, if I'm using pack transport, is about 12L. Another option I have done if I'm using pack transport is to carry my regular 28L pack and put a few heavier items...

Also while sunrise is an objective measure, early is very subjective. Unless you enjoy it or it is going to be quite hot there is no real reason to in the dark.
