Thank you for sharing this lovely inspiring story. I don't think I could persuade my 4 younger Irish sisters to join me on a Camino. I'm celebrating my 80th year by doing a half Camino but now my home and friends are 'calling me'. I'm going home tomorrow. Highlight today was the botufumero...
Hello Loman,
I have used mine on several Caminos in Spain and Portugal. I had to show the booklet form when returning to Scotland. One hostel on Rota Vicentina in Portugal in March this year wanted full passport, but that was the exception.
Buen Camino

Hello,
One point to note: Check that the little clips which adjust the straps (if your bra has them) don't sit in an awkward spot under your rucksac straps. Somebody told me that 30 years ago and I'm just passing it on.

Hello everyone,
If you liked 'The Way' you will also enjoy 'Saint Jacques ...La Mecque'. It is a French film from 2005. When I bought the DVD ages ago it did not have English subtitles, so i had do some tech stuff to download these. It might be different now. It is a very good story, well told.

Hello,
For the history part of your question: I loved Giles Tremlett 'Ghosts of Spain'. One of his more recent books is España which I look forward to reading.
Enjoy your research and your Camino.

Hello everyone,
When I read this thread and especially about the Compagnons I immediately thought of the European Erasmus Scheme. Obviously for a different skillset, but the concept of learning from others and from travel seems timeless.
I also thought of Saint Columbanus as I have heard him...
Hello again. I've had another look at BBC Reel. There are other interesting videos on there too, including something about Portugal's Stonehenge.
Because I only speak English I feel the need to load up with a stash of english language podcasts and audio books before i go to Spain/Portugal. This...
Thank you for posting this link. I'm in Scotland and hadn't heard of Reel.
I'm going to walk the Rota Vicentina in March so am now obsessed with all things Portuguese.
Can I access the BBC Reel videos when not in UK e.g. in Portugal? I think I cannot access BBC Sounds when in Spain or...
Hello,
Since you are in UK your friends are Aldi and/or Lidl. I bought a good 30 litre hiking rucksac in Lidl a few years ago. It was an excellent purchase. They sometimes have light hiking trousers too. My hiking socks are Bridgedale liners with Lidl hiking socks as outers. Just unsure there is...
Hello,
I once cycled around most of Holland. I stayed with dozens of wonderful private individuals as a member of 'Frienden Ops de Fiets'. This is approximately 'friends of the bike' and is a network of homes which provide at least bed and maybe breakfast. Hikers are welcome too.
You have to...
Hello Fi,
All good advice here.
FEET: These are your friends and need care, even on an "easy" Camino. I discovered that I need my footwear to be 1 or sometimes 2 sizes larger than when I was younger. I just walked Porto to Santiago in March 2022 (postponed from 2020), and I wore hiking shoes...
Hello Mary,
All the replies here have excellent, useful information. I am a sole female walker too and older than you. For my last 2 Caminos I used WhatsApp extensively, booking 2 days or so in advance. That has the advantage of having a phone record of what you have agreed and if you use simple...
Thanks for that Kirkie.
You might be interested in the connection between Co Fermanagh and Santiago. If you search for 'Enniskillen pilgrim shell Santiago' it comes up as one of Fermanagh's 100 objects. The artefacts are in Enniskillen museum.
There is a story in my family that we are...
