Camping along el camino in october

When i walked the Norte in October two years ago the weather generally was pretty consistently good for walking. A few days of rain and some misty, cold starts to the day. I met two people walking with dogs. They both had special little socks for their dogs to wear ( to avoid burning on hot...

Starting from Irun May 2 - Two Questions

Used the CSJ guide plus local guides as I went. By Santander I followed my nose and asked questions. Bilbao is a fab city of art and should not be missed. I caught a bus from Guernica to Bilbao ( to avoid lots of rural walking) and bus out of Santander for same reason. Wonderful walk. I felt...

    Waymarking on El Norte ???

I walked in 2012 and did the final half without any guidebook or map. It is pretty well marked. Sometimes it is better to leave the yellow arrows and walk the coastal E route. Follow, your nose, keep the sea on your right, walk towards the setting sun and the many angels on the way will soon put...

The force of the Camino: Hasn't everyone learnt a lesson or two?

I penned a song along the Way. It kept me going when times got hard. It contains true stories of some of the lovely Camino family I met on the way and some of the Spanish characters along the Norte. I guess we were all trying to find the right question and an adequate answer. THE WAY . I've...

A woman alone on the Norte?

I walked the Norte two years ago now. I met at least three solo women - two had walked all the way from Geneva on their own and one of these was going to walk back again along the Frances. Another was in her late sixties and had walked six or seven of the routes on her own. They all said that...

walking for 30 days at 55 / best place to start

I walked the Norte from Irun in 36 days following heart attack and stents. I think you could walk the Norte from Bilbao or Santander with no problems. Enjoy.

How Fit Were You at the Start?

You will be fine! If this 61 year old with a dodgy heart and 2stone excess weight can manage it , you will breeze it. Start slowly, wear two pairs of socks and test your boots for at least a month. Most people give up due to problems with feet/legs/back because they push too hard. A week in you...

sensible & safe for single female pensioner?

I walked the Norte in October two years ago. I met at least three single women ( two had walked from Switzerland, one was on her seventh Camino in her sixties ). They were all confident that it was perfectly safe. They walked in company when they wanted or alone as they chose. There were others...

    Guidance on back pack weight

Suggest you do a couple of day walks carrying the pack as it is and covering the kind of distances you are aiming for. If you can manage - you are fine. And it will get easier as you get stronger.
