I would like to know where you get this information. My friend who has lived in Japan, has a Japanese wife and has skated all over Japan for more than 20 years says this is news to him.
I'm in the planning phase for a November Shikoku Pilgrimage. To reduce the time and pounding on the pavement we are going to use inline skates - it looks like 80% is skate-able. Cost-wise my estimates will be about what you would spend on the Camino if you stayed in inexpensive single person...

For finding hostels the booking.com and Hostelworld apps are probably the best.
Last October I had a 33 day window, as well. Starting in SJPP I followed a 31 day plan which felt very comfortable to me. The last two days were only 20km each so I did them in one to have more time in SDC. Total 30 days. For me the biggest issue with the tight window was working out the time...
I was on a 31 day plan but at the end did the last two days in one and still got to the pilgrim office in Santiago by 4pm for a total of 30 walking days. I didn't feel like I rushed it or stressed myself.
To add to this, my Pixel accepts an eSim (GoogleFi - no international plan) and a SIM (I bought an Orange SIM in Spain). With WiFi calling my GoogleFi number worked over the Orange SIM data. This is a really nice bonus of eSIM+SIM. Dual SIM phones are handy
I realize this is a long shot but if anyone sees a black and grey glasses case with two sets of glasses in it on the trail pick them up. I'm in Logrono tonight. Bueno Camino!
Probably a little late but if anyone is on the MAD to Pamplona flight and wants to share a taxi to SJPP, I have one reserved for just after 1pm when the flight lands. I shouldn't be hard to find.
The umbrella ended up in the "I might use it category" so it didn't make my packing cut. My goal is to only carry things I absolutely need. I have other things for sun and rain that have other uses.
Leaving for Spain in a week and gave umbrellas some thought and came to the decision to buy a cheap one on the Camino if it seemed useful. In previous European visits umbrellas were easy to obtain.
Airline prices are all governed by data analytics so there are no guidelines for the best price. There are deals but you cannot predict when those are available. The best you can do is know the prices, keep looking and jump on one when available. There are some sites that look for deals.
I was watching a hiking video and the guy was making a very convincing argument for bringing a super light folding chair. I gave it a lot of thought because sitting on the ground sucks and getting up is becoming embarrassing.
Has anyone seen pilgrims with chairs?
What I learned from bicycle touring....
Cramps: I've had severe cramp issues all my life and have mostly solved it. Cramps are an electrolyte imbalance and can be caused by over-hydration. Over-hydration is more dangerous than dehydration. Drinking too much water can kill you (one warning...
