I think the real issue here is that the Camino is a new experience for many people. It is not the usual way that a lot of people travel any more coming from overseas. Here in the US, I always have a reservation somewhere when I am traveling. Also... -
Don't take off your backpack until you have your beer in hand. Don't leave it unattended if you are alone, or with newfound yet unknown "friends" IMHO.

The Compostela is a document that says that you walked to Santiago - if you skip the walk into Santiago you don't qualify.
