In 2016 I bought an Opinel carbide blade knife at the little hardware store in SJPdP and carried it for the Camino. In SdC I bought souvenir knives for my sons and mailed them all back home to the U.S. My Opinel is priceless to me! BTW, the post office in SdC was unsure if regulations would...
I'll put in my two cents worth of better "leave no trace" concept. Trash and graffiti. We could do better. Advice to self, if ever I can get back, "leave it better than you found it!" Buen Camino amigos.
April 19-May 19, 2016, I took only a liner. I got by, but the first couple weeks were pretty chilly. I slept in my clothes most nights. I used albergue blankets a few times, and they helped a lot, but was always worried about bed bugs, thinking they probably didn't get washed every day. I would...
2016 I sat at a picnic table, having lunch of walnuts and yogurt, under a tree at the Cruz de Ferro. I heard a buzzing up in the tree that was getting louder and louder. I thought I must have disturbed a bees nest and after several seconds, I took off running to get out of there! Embarrassingly...
There is, or was only one that I saw in in 2016, after Sarria. It came at a time I wasn't feeling well and REALLY needed one. I was so happy it wasn't locked. It had no toilet seat, but had paper and indoor plumbing tho!
I'm a fan of kinesiology tape for blister prevention. It stays on for several days and is flexible to adapt well. I also used A&D ointment for between the toes lubrication as it has some medication rather than just vaseline.
I carried the 36 Stratos in 2016 from mid April to mid May, and did not carry a sleeping bag, blanket, and only a light fleece. I found I could barely fit everything in, and even had to leave a pair of long johns in the donativo box is the SJPdP municipal albergue just to have enough room to...
It's a good post Jim. I use a Dexcom CGM and recently started with an OmniPod pump. When I hiked the Frances in 2016 I brought pens and a small monitor; light and small with insulin in a Frio case. The new stuff is heavier and takes up a ton of room. I would haver to carry a larger backpack. As...
Nothing cotton. Layer. If you're from a cold climate, you can tolerate cold mornings (28 degrees F in 2016) as it warms up quickly as well as walking, for the first couple weeks. I only brought a sleeping bag liner but should have brought a light down bag. 'Bought gloves after Roncesvalles and...
I have used both. The wool ones are a little thicker, and I like them for colder weather, but have used them in the Summer, also. Whatever fits in your shoes the best. If you have one foot bigger than the other, as I do, you could use the wool on your smaller foot.
I've always been confused about videoing the botafuermo. In 2016 I thought it was supposed to be forbidden and I told myself I would not. There was an announcement that I could not translate, and was told it said "no FLASH photography" is allowed. When the bota' started swinging hundreds of the...
Hi Handler. I walked the CF at age 60 in 31 days, with no full rest days. I trained with running a 10K several days a week, and also hiked with a backpack eventually to a few 20 mile days. The running and cardio will help you on the uphills, especially the first few days, and the other climbs...
