Same here. And many of those who do bring poles, leave them behind after a few days. If you're reasonably fit and avoid over-packing your backpack, poles are not necessary.
I had the same problem yesterday. The solution was TGV to Bordeaux and then local trains to Bayonne via Dax. If you get a reservation to Bordeaux you can always continue to Bayonne and Saint Jean Pied de Port on local trains that don't require seat reservations.

Tencel (viscose from wood fibers) is a fairly quick-drying option if you want to avoid both wool and polyester. It is also very soft and comfortable, and you avoid that synthetic feeling of polyester. I wear tencel underwear, but for T-shirts I still prefer merino wool.
Please don't recommend what3words for emergency situations in Spain (or any other country for that matter). It is a relatively new service, not widely known, and has many flaws (the language barrier to mention just one). 112 and AlertCops is all you need.
