Andrew, I'm starting from SJPP on May 10 and have - finally - concluded that's what I'll do. Here's from a post from someone else that helped me reach that conclusion: "I had the good luck a few years ago to buy a sleeping bag liner which is essentially a very light down/feather sleeping bag...
What time of the year/part of the month did you walk? Also, in all of this about being warm enough at night, it seems the assumption is that there is little or no heat in some/many/all? albergues (other than people's body heat). Is it the case that most albergues have no heat when it's cold...
Thanks, Damien. That sounds like a better, more versatile idea than the key chain light I was thinking of taking. Sometimes I wake up well before sunrise, and can't go back to sleep even at home, so what you describe is definitely a possibility for me too.
Thanks, everybody. No headlamp for me. I'll be taking a small key chain kind of light to get around an albergue at night and will patiently await daylight to get started in the mornings.
As someone suggested, I'm also thinking about a battery for charging the phone. This one weighs less than 5...
My first Camino is fast approaching. I'm reading a book written by someone who walked the Camino that's raised a couple of more questions. First, the author suggests that you've got to stay with your phone in an albergue while it's charging or it may be stolen. (I'm aware there are pros and cons...
I am planning my first Camino for this May and June. (Yes, it's getting close!) My wife may meet me in Santiago, after which we would do the Finisterre and Muxia walk together. I understand that many albergues require a pilgrim's passport to stay there. Assuming that's true for albergues between...
To all you happy pacerpole users on the Camino, are yours alloy or carbon? I like the idea of the lighter carbon ones, but understand they're not as sturdy (and thus I assume are more subject to breaking). My height and weight are such that I think either would work for me. Here's from an email...
And don't forget to have a bag to put the tips in if it is muddy!
Not sure I'm following this. Do you mean to have a bag to use for muddy tips when you're not using them (and haven't had a chance to clean the tips)? If it's muddy and you're using them, do you just them the regular way or is...
I'm planning to use walking poles for my first Camino this summer and this thread has made me interested in Pacer Poles. For most Camino gear decisions it seems there are different points of view. Is that the case for poles? Has anyone used both Pacer Poles and other kinds and concluded you like...
Thank you, FooteK. Hiking poles are in my plans, but I can't carry them on a plane from the US and I don't want to check my pack (as it might get lost in flight and delay my Camino. So, my current plan is to plan on getting poles in SJPP, which means I won't have them work with before I leave. I...
Sensible advice, C. Thank you. I suppose it should be no surprise that perspectives and experiences on this subject can be so very different. At the end of the day, a decision has to be made and yours seems a reasonable way to go about making it. I like the idea of fitting shoes planning to wear...
Thanks, everyone. For anyone interested in a really long discussion of feet growing/expanding from long distance hiking (complete with photographs, x-rays, medical textbook info, etc.), here's a link...
