I've been on a 2-night backpacking trip without it. I survived and slept marginally. I'm worried that with 30 days of poor sleep my immune system would become weakened, or at the very least, I would be pretty cranky.
Thanks everyone!
This gives me some great ideas on how to pare down. I will definitely cut out the phrase book and print out a page of phrases, and will pare down my first aid kit. I have used moleskin before and found it ok.
I could still make a trip to REI tomorrow if you think a 45...
I really don't want to bring bed bugs home (or to spread them along the camino). I will definitely spray my pack and outside of the sleeping bag with permethrin. If I do run into bedbugs, however, I'm not sure whether it is possible or recommended to put my Gregory Sage 55 L pack in a washing...
I'd like to thank Rambler for the suggestion to bring all your camino gear to the store and try it out in different packs. I did just that last week, looking for something lighter than my 30-year old Gregory pack, which weighed 5 pounds empty. I expected to spend 2-3 hours there and ended up...
Ok, here's my packing list, totaling 10.5 kg (23 lbs) not including food & water (another 2 kg) or what I will be wearing. Any input on how to lighten my load is welcome. The CPAP machine is the biggest culprit in terms of weight, but I think I need it. Without it I'd be down near 8 kg / 19...
wow, thank you Laurie and Miguel. These forums are such a helpful place to find information and to have questions answered quickly.
If we arrive in Santiago on schedule, then I think we will have time to walk to the Little Fox House. But if we are slower than anticipated, then we will take...
I think we will stay at the Hostal Triana in Puerta Del Sol, Madrid for 2 nights before we depart Spain (after spending a few days at the LIttle Fox House, which sounds absolutely wonderful). Our train from Santiago arrives in Madrid (at Chamartin, I think) at 9:48 pm on Weds. Oct. 31. Will...
Thanks Ivar
I hadn't realized that the rail strikes are on specific days. I heard about it and assumed that it might be a continuous strike that would last for weeks.

I was getting ready to purchase train tickets from Madrid to Leon for the start of our camino and from SdC to Madrid for our return. Then I learned about the rail strike. If I purchase rail tickets in advance, do I risk losing my money if that train is canceled due to strike? I imagine that...
OK, it is time for me to start weighing the individual items in my pack. But where do you find a scale that will weigh the small items? My bathroom scale works for the whole thing loaded, but is not sensitive enough to weigh the individual components.
Ok, even without the special mesh bag, I am still interested in finding a multi-purpose soap for the camino. I had been planning to take liquid camping soap to use for body, hands, hair and clothing, but, as has been pointed out here, why carry all that water? Will any solid bar soap work as...
Hmm, I wonder if I could turn my CPAP breathing machine into a boot dryer. It has no heater in it, but it does blow air, though not as forcefully as a hair dryer. Plus I'd feel better about carrying it if I had more than one use for it. (Just kidding, sort of ... but I might give this a...
