    Checking your backpack on flights

I do all those things to make sure it looks small and in the past it was allowed as carryon. Just got back from another Camino, this time I had an Osprey carry bag around the pack and made some alterations that made it tight around the pack…was allowed as a carryon. I work hard to keep my pack...

    Camino Portugues weather in June

Sorry finger hit the wrong thing. I’ll be on the Camino by June 5th and AccuWeather is already showing a lot of days of rain along the Camino. My gaitors are coming with me along with my rain gear. They are light and do keep the rain out of my boots.

Camino pilgrims prepare with shell ceremony

Agree, I like the idea, just don’t remember seeing much about them before 12 years or so ago. One of these just made the Arlington Diocese Herald (Catholic) here in Va.

    That was my guess also.

    Pack security.

Passport, cash, anything important was with me in a day pack. Just wanted to make sure the Osprey pack did not finish the Camino without me. The chain was always attached to metal. Agree, extra weight indeed.

Camino pilgrims prepare with shell ceremony

Question: In recent years group shell ceremonies have increased in the news, most have ties back to American Pilgrims on the Camino chapters. Is this a recent phenomena or something with real history on the Camino?

    Pack security.

Used a PacSafe chain to keep my pack attached to the bed and a day pack with valuables for exploring. Heading back for my 4th trip in 2 weeks. Really miss the Camino, a very special journey.

Carbon vs aluminum hiking poles: experiences and recommendations

I’ve walked with the Black Diamond Z pole since my first Camino and love it. Bought it in 2014, it folds and is aluminum. There have been some issues with expensive poles walking away. As I enter the town I plan to stop in, I fold mine up and put them in my pack. Never leave them with the...

Samos -- "miscellaneous" in the monastery?

Hello Bala, I have stayed at the Samos albergue once in April of 2015 (external)...and agree...it is very cold and damp. I did take a shower there and....cold! No hot water, at least when I was there. Was very grateful to attend Mass in the evening. As to food, a walking group that I had joined...

permethrin spray as a preventative for bed bugs

Did the same thing for my walk. Picked up Permethrin at REI...soaked pack, shell around my sleeping bag, boots, socks and set of clothes I used in the evenings.

    300 km instead of 100?

I don't think we need to get rid of the Compostela. I'm Catholic and walked for religious reasons. Half I met (walked from Borgos) along the way believed in...nothing (and many said they were not going to the Pilgrim office in Santiago). Why take the Compostela from believers? I entered...

Fellow pilgrims stealing belongings on the Camino - it happens

Just came off the Camino April 26th. A friend and I were having lunch at an interesting bar...where the skull with candle wax all about is...had a good lunch and off we went. We were 8 min down the road when a staff member from the bar chased us down on her bike to give my friend the things he...
