1,000 Miles in a Lumbar Pack: Ultralight Camino de Santiago Packing List

David I have considered the water/food issue also when setting up my kit and on a trial walk I teamed this up with a basic running bladder which would easily take enough water, food and a poncho while still keeping the whole set up lightweight it also works as a day pack if you want to leave the...

1,000 Miles in a Lumbar Pack: Ultralight Camino de Santiago Packing List

You’ll notice on my pack the 2nd bottle holder is empty that’s where I keep my factor 50 suncream (I’m Scottish I burn in a strong moonlight 🤣) and as I’m bald I always have a full floppy hat but I totally agree with protecting yourself from the sun 👍

1,000 Miles in a Lumbar Pack: Ultralight Camino de Santiago Packing List

Lime green is micro fibre towel blue is sleeping bag liner, stored on top in a dry bag 👍 second dry bag for spare clothing. I take a paramo smock which is also stored on top and yes shoulder straps which can take a pouch…for food I normally buy when I stop for a coffee and carry a basic...

Maybe a rude question! How old are you?

Funny story about age…I walked my first camino with my father in law and when we went to receive our compostelas he thought he would probably be the oldest that day at 75…well as fate would have it the name above his in the registrar that day was 76 year old gentleman 🤦🏼‍♂️ he had a good chuckle...

    Walking with headphones?

Convert to bone conductors a few years back I can hear everything around me and when the going gets tough I can stick on some boosting tunes 👍

    OK guys, what underwear?

I’ve been using Step One for a few years now and have never looked back they are a bit more expensive but I think they are worth every penny 👍 https://uk.stepone.life/collections/boxer-brief

    Decathlon backpack

My “big bag” is actually a Lowe alpine airzone trail 25 but I’m just thinking eventually the airlines will tighten the rules 🙄

    Decathlon backpack

I spent 30 years in the fire service breaking the habit of “just in case” hasn’t been easy…on my first camino I pretty much carried a trauma pack just in case 🤦🏼‍♂️🤣🤣

    Decathlon backpack

Likewise thanks to previous caminos I’ve realised that 1. The Camino is not a fashion show and I don’t need evening wear to get tapas and a bottle wine 2. I don’t need to carry a full trauma kit because it would seem Spain has medical supplies everywhere 🤣🤣 so this is me looking at a happy...

    Decathlon backpack

I normally travel light, although I add an extra pair of boxers, socks, sandals and a T-shirt to this packing if I want to be extravagant 😁👍

    Decathlon backpack

I’m having a look at the Decathlon FH500 ultra light backpack 20L does anyone have any experience of this bag I am looking at it as a small (airline friendly) alternative for my shorter trips ie two weeks or so 👍

    Show me your backpack!

I use an airzone trail 25 and use the waist pouch for snacks and a water bottle with drinking tube in the side pouch I did remove the side clip from my water bottle to save space (link below) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hydrate-for-Health-Hydrant-Drinking/dp/B08663S8N4/?tag=casaivar-21

How light was your backpack for Camino Frances (800 km)

I haven’t been brave enough to do it yet but there is the “wear one, wash one” option which takes my normally 6kg pack down to 2 1/2kg but it is a very harsh sift to go basic and use the waist bag…one day though 😁

    Zubiri or Larrasoana?

I can’t give an opinion on the hostel (I went posh and stayed in a pension 😁) in Larassona but the cafe/bar/store there is run by a wonderful and welcoming couple and has a great pilgrim feel as the afternoon and evening goes on with everyone mixing and meeting for that reason alone I would go...

    Auberge Borda

I stayed in 2021 and it is still one of my most memorable experiences, the beds and facilities where magnificent and as much as I was not really a big fan of sharing my motivation for walking I found it very spiritual and made some great friendships that will remain with me…I cannot recommend it...

    Flights to/from Edinburgh

I suppose when I’m coming home next time I’ll have to travel via Dublin…probably with a lay over…🤣🤣 Guinness it is then 👍
