Distance From Amsterdam to St. Jean Pied De Port

As you are starting from the Netherlands, check the website of the 'Nederlands Genootschap van Sint Jacob' (Dutch confraternity of Saint James), the biggest Saint James organisation of the world (over 15,000 members). All routes in Europe, also in English...

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

No, the albergue belongs to the Real Colegiata de Santa Maria de Roncesvalles, and the prior is the final decision maker. The volunteers are all member of the 'Nederlands Genootschap van Sint Jacob' (Dutch Confraternity of Saint James), the largest Saint James association in the world (more...

LIVE from the Camino SJPP TODAY May 2, 2024

Yes, that is a problem indeed. Older Korean (Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese) people sometimes do not speak any English. I always try to find a younger Korean/Japanese/Taiwanese pilgrim who speaks English and ask him/her to help and translate. But that is not always possible. I speak a bit Korean...

LIVE from the Camino SJPP TODAY May 2, 2024

During the last week it was daily approx. 50/60 pilgrims. In the first weeks of september (also a very busy period) it can go up to approx. 100 per day ...

LIVE from the Camino SJPP TODAY May 2, 2024

The language barrier will not be a problem; we Dutchies live in a small country, we speak our languages ;-) Nearly everybody speaks English, lots of us speak German and/or French and/or even Italian, and in every group of hospitaleros at least one of them speaks Spanish.

LIVE from the Camino SJPP TODAY May 2, 2024

Of course we assist, but there is another problem: most taxidrivers cannot come to the albergue (on weekdays) before 4.30 / 5.00 pm because during the afternoon they are busy collecting local children from school and bring them home.

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

Yes, much to our regret it is like that. 183 of the 245 beds can be pre-booked, and in busy times (like these first weeks of May) they are all booked, every day. That is why I always recommend to make a reservation. And yes, groups often prebook and sometimes they arrive with a minibus or they...

    Accommodation worries

The first three weeks of May it is like that, every year. No extra costs for the reservation, but the reservated beds are in the renovated part of the Monastry and the price is higher than the price of a walk-in bed in the sótano or in the winter-albergue.

    Accommodation worries

@davejsy, you are right, but not In the bottleneck between SJPdP and Pamplona. Proudapo starts in about a week, in the 2nd week of May. In the first three weeks of May (and the first three weeks of September) hundreds of pilgrims start every day in SJPdP, and there simply isn't enough...

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

Couldn't agree more! And there is another reason to book: if you make a reservation you'll have a bed in the renovated building, with the beds in 4-pods and lockers, good wifi. For walk-in pilgrims we have (cheaper) beds in the sótano and in the winter-albergue, in the old building. No lockers...

    Accommodation worries

Great advise from DoughnutANZ! One addition: you can check-in as from 10 am, although you are not yet allowed to go to the dormitories (for the simple reason we are cleaning there). So relax, take a coffee and/or lunch at one of the restaurants and return at 2 pm, then we open the doors ;-)

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

May 1st is a holiday in Spain and in France, so many Spanish and French people take a long weekend off and walk a few days. Furthermore: the first three weeks of May (and the first three weeks of September!) are always very, very busy.

    Getting from Orisson to Roncesvalles

There is no road between Col Lepoeder and Roncesvalles. Express Bourricot can take you to Roncesvalles but that is on the road N-135 which goes through Valcarlos. Or you take the daily bus from SJPdP to Roncesvalles.

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

It is correct what Kathar1na posted, except the amount of bookable beds in Aterpea is a bit different in the renovated albergue: there are 183 beds. Furthermore we have 32 beds in the sótano, and another 30 beds in the winter-albergue. These beds (32+30) are not bookable. At the moment it is...

    Cycling SJPP to Roncesvales

The Napoleon route is the walking route. Cyclers take the N-135 through Valcarlos. Most cyclers continue after Roncesvalles. They ask for a stamp, have a drink at the bar and go on.

    Alert Theft at Roncesvalles

No, the lockers were not broken. And it was a couple, who decided both to take a shower at the same time. I always wonder: when there is a locker, why do people not use it? And if you are together, why not shower one after the other? Questions .... questions.

LIVE from the Camino SJPdP “Completo” tonight!

In Roncesvalles during the Semana Santa and Easter weekend it was more quiet than we expected. But the last one and a half week it is full house daily; no beds available after 3.30 pm so make sturen you reservate a bed!

Camino at the beginning of Spring 2024 from the UK with my dog.

Be aware that Maya will not only not be allowed in (most) albergues and hotels, but neither in bars, restaurants, trains, busses, taxi's. Spanish people have a total different relationship with dogs than people from the UK.

Legal Changes Coming for Spanish Accommodations

In Roncesvalles we scan every paspoort / ID-card and this info goes directly electronically to the Guardia Civil every day, so we are told. The data of the old-fashioned Italian ID-papers which cannot be scanned are entered by hand into the computer. The Valcarlos police drops in at the albergue...
