Forecast arrival of pilgrims in Santiago

Probably a very limited effect. Those who are travelling long distances for their Caminos are probably committed well in advance of weather forecasts. And last month's record Compostela figures happened despite some atrocious weather!

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

My mother-in-law walked the Camino Frances 5 years before I did. When I got back to London at the end of my walk she asked which section I'd liked most. When I replied 'Galicia' she said 'Of course - it's so like Scotland!'

Has the dog “policy” on the Camino changed?

That is what news websites have reported though someone claiming to be the dog's owner disputes this in the comments section for this article. https://lacronicadesalamanca.com/576933-el-perro-de-uno-de-los-peregrinos-espanto-a-la-vaca/

    Surfing the Camino

A graph showing the busiest/quietest days of the week for receiving Compostelas. If you can time it to arrive Monday to Wednesday then chances are you will be walking in less company those last few days.

Has the dog “policy” on the Camino changed?

Particularly not on some of the less travelled routes where you may pass through pasture land with sheep and cattle. A nasty incident this week on the Via de la Plata when a pilgrim's dog scared cattle which then charged and badly injured two pilgrims including the owner of the dog.

    Definition of a Pilgrim 🤣

I used to own a small sailing boat. Sailing has often been described as being like standing in a cold shower while tearing up £20 pound notes....

    The Camino will provide?

    Bones definitely. Certificate - no.

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

The usual stroll along the ex railway line to the pub and back yesterday. An exceptionally warm sunny day. The tables turned for once. On a day when Galicia was wet and cold we here in Wales managed to sit outside in the warm sunshine at 5pm. Didn't last long but much appreciated! On the way...

New Camino Movie -The Way My Way - World Premiere

It seems there are to be more Q&A screenings with the director in Australian cinemas in the run up to the general release of the film. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=415344868027068&set=a.125003190394572

    SJPP in November

Many of the private albergues and hostals will be closed but the municipal albergue is open all year round. I stayed there in January last year. There are enough bars and shops open for food and supplies year round too.

    Try something new?

I do not usually plan to stop at any particular albergues. I walk the distance that feels right for the day and then aim for the most convenient one. If that happens to be one I've stayed in before and enjoyed then I'll probably go there again. The only albergue I would aim for specifically is...

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

I walked the ST Olavsleden from Sundsvall to Trondheim in May. Beautiful but chilly! Mostly snow-free apart from the border crossing into Norway where there were still a few deep drifts that came as a bit of a surprise!
  13. Bradypus

Is 7 day walk enough to feel the Camino?

For me there is a different character between long and short Caminos. They both have "a vibe" though the one from walking 7 days feels very different from walking for two months.

    Partially unplugging from the world

This just appeared on a Facebook group that I follow. Seems the author feels that walking a pilgrimage without a smartphone is such an extraordinary radical concept that it deserves an exclamation mark....

    Partially unplugging from the world

Me too. I walked my first Camino without a mobile phone or internet access. Just two or three landline calls home from payphones along the way. But people have become very accustomed to live instant connections these days. Once that becomes a routine part of your life it can be difficult to...

    Partially unplugging from the world

Set yourself a specific regime? Gadgets on for a particular time and purpose then off for the rest of the time perhaps. Set some ground rules with those who may need to contact you - text messages rather than instant messaging? To be read and responded to when appropriate rather than...

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

When I'm walking in Spain I sometimes make a palm cross or two from the fronds of the cabbage palms you often find by the path. Just to keep in practice though I do sometimes offer one as a souvenir to any passing pilgrim. Struck me today that I could do something similar with the broad leaf...

    What's changed?

Like @David Tallan I have positive memories of the souvenir shops in Santiago around that time - I was a year later in 1990. They did not feel out of place in a major tourist destination like Santiago. The taped gaita music was the soundtrack for the end of my Camino and it still brings back...

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

Barber shop next door to the pub. Gorseinon. One of many in a fairly small town. When did barbers take over the world? 💈

    What's changed?

The botafumeiro is out of use at the moment for repairs. Unlikely to be back before June at the earliest. And even then it will only be guaranteed to be used on a set number of occasions in the liturgical year unless private funding pays for its use at another mass.
