Assuming the basic dimensions of the larger backpack are within the airlines' carry-on limits, but by the time you get all your gear packed in the pack will be too overstuffed to squeeze into the overhead bin, take along a small, lightweight daypack which can be folded into itself. Remove some...
I agree with you, @BROWNCOUNTRYBOB. Note that I did not suggest using them for hanging washed clothing on an outdoor line, but they work well for socks that may not have fully dried from yesterday's wash or from crossing a stream. As for the clips/clothes pins/clothes pegs, we tried the small...
I'd recommend a couple of mini-carabiners that you can attach to gear loops on your backpack for attaching flip-flops or sandals; they weigh next to nothing. Also, a couple of large safety pins -- diaper pins are perfect, but getting hard to find since hardly anyone uses cloth diapers anymore...
Exactly what we did, except we added the liquids (toiletry stiff mainly) in the tube as well. That way we weren't limited to the 3-oz bottles that TSA requires for carry-on. Just be sure to write your name and contact info on the outside of the tube.
Excellent post, Dave, and a valuable resource. This should go into that "Resources" section so it remains easily available and not tied to a particular thread.
I've tried both Superfeet and SOLE insoles. For me, the Superfeet are fine for wearing around town, but for hiking, and especially long-distance hiking, I prefer the SOLE brand. But that's just me -- as they say, different strokes for different folks. Either way, be sure to try them on in the...
Were the orthotics designed to be worn with the original insoles in place? If so, take them back to the podiatrist for shaving and/or adjustment. If not, take the original insoles out and see if that helps the fit of the orthotics.
I've used both Superfeet and Sole brands. Of the two, I prefer the Sole brand because they can be heated at low temperature in an oven, then inserted into your boot or shoe, and after you walk around on them for a while, they self-mold to your foot--much like ski boot inserts. But the Superfeet...
I had a pair of Vasques back in the 1980s that looked like that. They were state-of-the-art for the time--"lightweight" and waterproof. I also had a manual typewriter, a telephone with a dial and a long cord attached to the wall, and a black-and-white TV that I had to get up and walk across the...
I'm also a Moab fan. I'm on my second pair of high top waterproofs for winter and second pair of low-top ventilators for summer, with probably 1500 km on each pair and never a blister. I've been tempted to switch to lighter trail runners, but as my pappy once said, if it ain't broke, don't fix...
Thanks for sharing your wisdom, Dave. You're a valuable resource for this forum. Now, how about a discussion about the effects of scoliosis and how to properly adjust the straps for someone like me who has a bit of this spinal curvature, which results in one shoulder being slightly lower than...
