    Since mine was an emergency decision, luckily I had a fairly large dry bag in my pack that could take the heavier stuff I wanted to send ahead. It worked fine for me.

    Walking the Arles route?

    I walked the route the other way from Montpellier to Puenta la reina in April May last year and found it generally well marked, certainly in France the routes are marked in both directions. You should have no problem.

    Ponte de Lima - Santiago: March 1st 2014

    I walked this route in March last year and it rained heavily most days. I found the best combination for me was rain jacket, poncho, waterproof trousers and shorts. Even Goretex did not stay waterproof under the onslaught. The march before was beautiful weather! Good luck!!

    I walked solo from Oporto last spring, there very few pilgrims about and I was the only one in an albergue once, but I never felt unsafe. Everybody was very friendly, in Portugal particularly, that I met.

    Apart from increasing your fitness to a level where you feel confident to deal with long days of walking, I suggest you learn some Spanish. You could be pretty fluent in 5 years and it will greatly enhance your experience if you can understand and communicate with the local people aong the way...
