Walk out of order/ SJPDP to Pamplona

I started two Caminos on May 13th exactly in St.Jean. Was great both times. Mixed weather, plenty of people, plenty of doomsday talk of not getting beds. But would do it again. Maybe get reservations for Roncesvalles and Zubiri.

    Roncesvalles or Burguete?

I'll chime in with the motion to stay in Roncesvalles for a first camino just because of experiencing this place. (and contrary to Roland i don't have very fond memories of the food)

Najera albergue reopens after renovation work

Uhm... from my memory the beds looked like this pre-renovation already. Really liked the albergue when i stayed there 2022. The airconditioning worked wonders. Bathrooms could have used some update, and i guess they did that now. But all in all a very good albergue and quite cheap on top of it.

    Getting from Orisson to Roncesvalles

I think the forest way, which i took in 2022, was where i hurt my chin muscle. But then it might have something to do that i walked all the way from Orisson to Zubiri on day 2. In hindsight, not the smartest move. That being said, the forest way is steep. Period. It is not impossible, but i...

Advice for Sleeping Options and Other Advice for Inaugural Pilgrims

To the best of my knowledge there aren't any real bottlenecks between Leon and Santiago. You should be fine. Not that i ever had problems getting a place in albergues, but i decided that it is a lot easier to carry a credit card than a tent and if that rare "just in case" scenario would occur...

Vaping/electronic cigarette liquid shop in León

Quick google search on my end found some options, maybe different keywords...

LIVE from the Camino SJPdP “Completo” tonight!

Honestly, with the holy year being over and easter being a month ago, i did not expect the same business this time as we seen in the last (two) years. I can only speculate what has lead to this.

Making friends when starting the Camino later

While having started both times in St.Jean i made very intense friendships in Leon, Foncebadon, La Faba and even Fisterra. So i guess i'd say don't worry to much about that.

A few quick questions before departing on the Francés

I would disagree slightly by not calling it a "rule of thumb" but maybe a valid option depending on ones personal risk management. I walked mid may last time while everyone was panicking about sleeping on a park bench if not having a reservation... and i had absolutely no issue with getting a...

    Cold nights in summer?

I walked my caminos in May/June, so my experience will be a bit different to July. However, i experienced quite some chilly evenings, the occasional strong wind, single digit mornings, and one day in June 2019 even a bit of snow at Foncebadon. So i pack that i can walk (for some time) in adverse...

    Best route into Burgos

According to Gronze the Castanares variant is currently closed due to construction works. Or maybe is not, because it only states that for "March". But as we all know, public construction sites can take longer to finish than planned... However, having walked the alternative myself and having...

    Weather in early may

Started twice around this date. I always pack to be OK in temps from 0°C upwards. Not that those temps are very likely, but i actually encountered single digits quite some mornings and once even a bit of snowfall. For rain i go with a minimal approach, light rain gear and non waterproof shoes...

    Snowfall in the Roncesvalles area

Since my wife is just in the train to Bayonne and to start walking tomorrow i am following the weather with quite some interest. While the snow might be annoying, the extreme winds in the forecast from tomorrow afternoon give me more concerns since quite some walking is through the forest and...

    Dragonte Route

You can walk along the road from San Fiz de Seo to the N-VI road (which the main route follows). Youll meet it a bit after Trabadelo, so with some decent timing you can meet your friend at that point. Or walk back to Trabadelo, but that seems rather pointless to me. However bear in mind that you...

Join for a Coffee or Wine in Leon - March 3rd

Another place i can highly recommend is the bar "Jamon Jamon". Not sure if they still exist, but they used to hand out rather generous free tapas with every drink. (And the drinks were on the cheap side of things to start with).

What would you change about the CF - if you could?

The occasional extra trash can and/or public toilet could make it slightly easier for those... special folks... that can't be bothered to carry their trash and/or used TP to the next village to not throw it behind the nearest bush. Not that i think it would eliminate the problem completely, but...

What is your favorite (affordable) restaurant on the Camino Frances?

Depends on your definition of "affordable". Bar O Pedrouzo made a killer steak for around 40€ (for 2, so 20 each, drinks and sides included). Bar Soriano in Logrono makes great champinion pinchos for like 2€ each, pair with a glass of rioja for like 1,5€. Meson a Esquipa in A Salceda has really...

    Orisson & Borda

Nope, no hidden albergues between Borda and Roncesvalles. You could take the alternative route via Valcarlos and split your stage there or taxi back and forth on the route Napoleon. Or just walk on to Roncesvalles. It's hard but doable.

    Descent into Roncesvalles

Havin walked both, i found the left path a bit more beautiful but a lot harder on the knees. Pretty sure elevation profiles for both can be found online, but to make things short: if you get issues with yopur knees on steep descents, take the right hand path.

If you had to choose to skip a part of the route. What would be your choice?

While i think that 42 days are plenty for a decent walker, the sections i might skip if i was forced to do so would be either Villafranca Montes de Oca to Burgos or the day into and out of Leon (or even Sahagun-Leon/Leon-Astorga if i was really desperate)
