    Wikiloc or alternative for planning

OsmAnd is a great mapping / navigation app though perhaps to some extent it's for the cognoscenti. As an offshore surveyor, navigator, with 40 years experience I found it too complex, with too many options. That is both it's strength and weakness; get your head around the system then it's a...

    Wikiloc or alternative for planning

True to some extent in that komoot uses OSM for its mapping and OSM map quality varies across countries. However OSM in Europe is good, very good I'd say and caminos are certainly shown within the region. Perhaps the qualifier that it's a German app was irrelevant, it's an international company now.

    Wikiloc or alternative for planning

There are so many mapping and navigation apps, the best one is often the one you're most familiar with. However it could be that Komoot would work for you. It's a German app, started I think as a bike routing app but includes hiking, running and mountaineering options. You will probably need to...

Type of bike for Camino Francés

Sounds like a good Camino to ride and the Verde as an alternative to the CF from Lugo to Santiago. Thanks

Type of bike for Camino Francés

Interesting, because it's difficult to answer these sort of open ended questions without more information. Age, experience, are you 100km roadies or 40km trail riders? The CF can be ridden pretty well on anything with wheels, imo an ebike is overkill, there's nothing difficult on this Camino...

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

I meant of course the "fight or flight" response which we have little control over. A rider will always try to avoid an obstacle since most are fixed but the pedestrian also has an almost automatic response to avoid another moving or threatening object; this imo is where the difficulty lies...

    Cycle storage in Gijon

Try WarmShowers but be aware they are experiencing difficulties with their email system so message several in the area. Also some hostels / hotels will have storage, those out of town will probably have larger facilities

Getting a bike from the UK

To paraphrase, travelling with a bike is the worst, travelling on a bike is the best way to travel. Getting from your home to the start of your Camino with a bike is an exercise in logistics and a compromise in terms of time Vs money. Plenty of money & short on time then rent, plenty of time but...

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

Ha, that's amusing and possibly correct, put a neophyte on a powered vehicle in rocky terrain is asking for trouble. A couple of misconceptions in replies above; eMTBs do require physical input and many peregrinos seem to assume that they're just targets for guys on bikes. A rider will do his...

    Cycling SJPP to Roncesvales

There are luggage transfer services all the way along the CF with plenty of info on this forum. The main service in SJPDP is ExpressBourricot, all the info is on their website. Presumably they don't expect peregrinos to reach Roncevalles much before midday and you're not allowed in to the...

    Cycling SJPP to Roncesvales

Riding the Camino in 2022 I got my self a bit worked up over this climb, so much so that for the first & only time ever I used the pack transport service to Roncesvalles. Suffice to relate that the ride up (road) was pretty easy but then I had to wait three hours for my luggage before continuing...

Good to know you managed to sell the bike, it was a bargain for the right person. Richard

Advice on Getting a Second-Hand Gravel Bike?

If you're living in or are in Spain atm try Wallapop or Milanuncios, plenty of bikes available. Accessories, routing and all the other interesting stuff are another chapter in the book. Buen bici-camino. Richard

Via de la Plata - Recumbent...?

As others have written, it's mostly doable by bike so it will generally be doable by a recumbent trike, what hasn't been discussed is the added difficulties of using a trike. Looking at the ICE Adventure HD it folds, which is good, what's the weight and is it the manual or e-assist model? A few...

Caminos for cycling that are not very hilly.

Train / ferry whilst environmentally sound is a bit of fool's errand, very hard, i did it once Cádiz to Plymouth, never again. Flight to SVQ will be much easier then airport bus in to the city. Good luck

    Train bookings

Recently I was looking for a train from Malaga to Cádiz, RENFE came up with nada. The reason being that for most routes the system does not handle connections - which is strange because it's not unusual. Seat61.com provides a lot of useful information about trains all across the world and the...

Caminos for cycling that are not very hilly.

Spain, by some criteria, is reckoned to be the second most mountainous country in Europe. How about some of the Caminos in flatter countries, Netherlands, France etc?

What exercises to do to strengthen lower back?

You have received a lot of good suggestions about back exercises and walking the Camino so I have a couple of suggestions from a cycling pov. * Why not cycle the Camino? You're obviously a very competent cyclist, the bike carries the weight and you can ride as many or as few kilometres as you...

    cycling from Santiago to Lisbon?

Well it would seem to me that if you're cycling 1000km & perhaps 10,000m vertical from Sevilla, by the time you arrive Santiago you'll both be fit, know what you're capable of and perhaps jettisoned some cargo. The hills / mountains in Spain will be more work than the coastal route in Portugal...

    Cycling the Norte

...on a full-sus trail bike. Also does he intend riding the Camino or following the road option? Here are a few suggestions for you & your friend: * he might consider riding more of El Norte starting further east as there are some great rides in Pais Vasco & Cantabria then join you further...
