    Alternatives to Sarria to SDC

Interesting, I just finished walking the last segment of the Camino, from Pamplona to Santiago. At 79, not sure how many partial Camiinos I have left in me, but I really have an itch to go from Sarria to Santiago again. Been that route twice before, but to me, it is the best part. Lots of...

    Medication woes

2028!, I am not sure am going to be alive then, at 84. Let’s see here…sleep med, gut med, PTSD meds…(can’t go squirrely on the Camino, after all). Not too much to carry, for my usual 17-21 day journey. In the end, I find that I don’t need as much of the meds while walking. One of the many...

    Alternatives to walking if injured

First partial go-around on the Camino, 6 years ago, I messed up my back just before Rabanal del Camino, really bad. I was with two friends. We took a taxi to Tricastela, then walked the rest of the way to Santiago. Well, I walked as much as I could. Some days 2-4 miles, some days 8, never...

    Yet another accommodation thread

Just came thru the Camino F, from Logrono to Ponferrada. No problems with hostels at all, in 2 instances I was the only occupant. Yes, you can worry, but your friend should be OK.

    Post-camino fitness

Returned 3 weeks ago from walking from Logrono to Ponferrada. Now at 5500 feet elevation. Not walking as much as I should, for me just laziness. Want to walk, but just too many things to do. Maybe next week…

Walking with a messenger bag rather than a backpack

From experience, a buttpack is not a large pack, maybe 12x14, at least the ones we used in the Nam. Used with the military suspenders, which are comfortable, the H suspenders may be able to accommodate a secondary pack, but not the Y suspenders. Civilian packs may be larger.

I did it- and feel like a winna!

You have years ahead of you…I am 79 and just finished the last 200+ miles, Logrono to Ponferrada. Started in 2018, did another 150 miles in 2021, and now done. Probably my last Camino, unless I can convince one of my kids to hike from Sarria on. But you, in your 60s, many Caminos to look...

    want solitude

I returned last week from 3weeks on the Frances. In some cases, I was the only person in an albergue. Walked from Logrono to Ponferrada. The earlier in my Camino it was the fewer people, by the time I climbed to the Cruz de Ferro their numbers had risen, but still a lot of time I was walking...

    Sarria to Madrid

Can’t seem to find the answer in the archives. I need to go from Sarria to Madrid in April. What is the beSr way? R2R says no bus or train…thanks

Solo walkers - what kinds of food do you buy at grocery stores?

Fruit, fresh if available, in pouches or cans, if not. Canned fish, sausage, bottle of beer, some packaged sweets. Try for a communal meal at Albergue, pastry and coffee for desayuno hour or so after I start. Cup of instant coffee at wake-up. I refuse to buy coffee from a machine!

Looking for a weight loss accountability partner who has walked the Camino

One thing to remember is that part of your weight remaining stable on the Camino is a gain in muscle mass and loss of fat. You should be able to look in a mirror and see the difference. Plus the ability to outwalk your friends!

The Way: how do you feel about THE movie?

IIRC, the Ugly American was the one who got his hands dirty working with the people, not the arrogant Ambassador, per the book.

Not everyone happy about pilgrim/tourist pressure.

Last partial Camino in 2021, walked with some friends. We had walked 150 miles in 2018 with everything on our backs. This time, I was surprised to see them toting roller bags with ALL SORTS of stuff. I was still using my pack. I don’t think they ever had to wash their clothes on a17 day trip...

Is a sleeping bag or a liner enough for the Camino in April?

I bought a lightweight, xtra long, cheap bag off of EBay 6 years ago and used it on 2 Demi-Camino of 150 miles each, both in October. Worked fine. Rather than roll the bag up tightly, I spread it out in a large Ziploc bag. Adds cushioning. Bag is reasonably lightweight but in all honesty, I...

Struggling with 1/2 size larger - Lone Peaks - insole recs?

Feet do grow larger during/after a Camino. Had to go up a shoe size after my first go-around. Try inserts, they dote d to help fill up a shoe. However, I recommend buying a quality one. The cheap Chinese insoles are junk, in my experience. With only a size 11, you can buy one size longer...

    Show me your backpack!

I use a Bergens Rondane 46 pack. It has two water pocket sleeves. One is full and the other half full, unless I anticipate a long stretch without water. use empty liquor flat bottles, plastic and 750ml. They just fit better. Also a 375 m” bottle in my front picket, filled with water. I...

Steep passes on camino frances sjpd to logrono (fear of heights)

Try some knee braces, the pull-on type you find on E-bay. Not perfect but they assist. I have very bad knees, and multiple replacements , but they are the best knee braces I have found and I intend to use a pair when I finish the CF in March/April.

Camino Wildlife (excluding escaped circus animals)

I have heard that the grizzled bar tends towards more open spaces and can’t hide as well. Plus most bear attacks are over a kill. Rifle shots are the dinner bell for them. Blacks are different, if they approach you, they intend to eat you, not just beat you up.

The Old Way and The South Downs Way

Sure…while on the Strip, you can go to Paris, New York, Egypt, the tropics, and visit a Circus! Plus lots more…
