Wise Debit Card on the Camino

Hola @laurenligreci, having cash to spend on the Camino is a real problem for some travelers. Is it possible for you to get a Visa or MC Travel Money Card? I currently have a Visa version, I have it loaded with Euros and US dollars. I can withdraw cash from major bank ATMs, by limiting my...

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

I too have cycled (2015) and walked (2017) and I agree that there are some sections that even experienced mountain bike riders should avoid. Unfortunately there no specific cycle guides in English ( I have one in French - that does have some route restriction info). The problem I see with...

    Cotton blend socks

Hola @falconbrother you are, imho, asking the best question. foot protection is probably the most important feature of a successful Camino. From my perspective it’s a personal choice, what do You prefer? I have over that past 10 years become a two sock pilgrim: a thin “toe sock” liner sock and a...

    Camino Frances 2024 Biker/Walker Accident

Hola as one who cycled the CF in 2015 and walked ii in 2017 I know first hand the issues. Imho most locals use the roads for exercise. If training for off road then they would know about how crowded the CF is or can be and would avoid those crowded times. Imho there are some sections of the CF...

    Alternatives to Sarria to SDC

Hola in both 2015 and 2017 I avoided staying in Sarria. It just did not grab me. I went on via the railway crossing and found another albergue Carmen something!

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

My own experience in 2017 was that, quite correctly, Roncesvalles were admitting pilgrims in the order in which they had arrived (starting at 14.00). Given it was lunch time I opted to share a taxi with two girls needing first aid at Burguete and continued to Espinal. I had a warm shower, washed...

LIVE from the Camino They are recommending the Valcarlos route tomorrow, how foolish would it be to go Napoleon?

Hola - in 2017 I met a young Italian woman pilgrim who had a similar event. She spent two days in hospital (first time in her life). It was about 5 days after the event when I met her and she still had significant bruising. So yes I totally agree - if the SJPP PO says/recommends the Valcarlos...

LIVE from the Camino They are recommending the Valcarlos route tomorrow, how foolish would it be to go Napoleon?

Hola WOW I can’t remember so many professional answers to one of the most difficult Camino questions: Day 1 Napoleon or Valcarlos? This was me back in May 1, 2017. On the Napoleon it was snow, rain, 80kmph winds and temperatures below 5C ( before wind chill). I took Valcarlos on May 2 and you...

My memories are similar - that is the main road from Hontanas to Castrojeriz so I doubt " it" will be closed. Any further update Brad?? Cheers

Lost & Found Backpack stolen from albergue in León

Hola - bummer, bummer bummer. So very sad to hear this news. Very thankful that your wife was camino wise and took all her valuables etc. Hopefully it will turn up - the request for Leon pilgrims to check the dumpsters is a good one. Cheers for now.

Iberia, by James Michener, a worthy read before, during, or after a camino

Hola @James van Hemert Thanks for the reminder. Going back 50+ years I became Michener total fan,. I must have read just about everything he wrote. But this one does not ring any bells. So lets be clear is this James A Michener (American prolific author who died about 30 or so years ago) or...

Valdesalor - picking up the albergue keys from bar, etc

It’s 11 years since my experience in this little town. About 11 of us arrived on a Sunday when there was a wedding taking place, I think just about half the village was attending including both the usual eating places. The key as provided by a village official, we paid our 10 E, signed the book...

Any experience in using your Non-EU Visa Debit Card with 6-digit PIN in ATMs?

Hola, whilst I use a six digit pin here in Aussie, my bank has confirmed that for my travel money cards it’s a four digit pin. Apparently you can overcome this by having a pin that ends in double zero (00), the EU financial system will then just recognise the first four digits. Cheers.

    Sleep sack for bed bugs

Hola, as a lead up to both my 2015 and 2017 I treated my sleeping bag AND the silk liner . Even when my travelling companion was bitten I was not affected. Whether it was the treatment or the silk material I do no know. But I do do as thorough bed inspection before accepting the bed. I have know...

LIVE from the Camino Do not climb over this fence

Hola @peregrina2000, not being familiar with your location I went to google maps. So it looks like you are on a camino somewhere SE of Sevilla. Hope its a great camino. Cheers

LIVE from the Camino Working as hospitalero at Albergue Municipal de La Virgen del Camino

Hola @Martin Doyle, Congrats on taking on the role as Hospitalaro. Being a newly renovated albergue it should be a little easier to keep clean. From what I read in Brierley it has 40 beds in one room? For pilgrims who are wishing to "avoid" Leon its, imho, a great alternative. For you having...

    Botafumerio out of service

Hola, whilst it may be disappointing for April/May and early June pilgrims to not see the botafumeiro swing it is quite and involved piece of equipment (from my numerous observations). Maybe the ceiling fittings need repairs and other fittings (ropes etc) need more than "running repairs). Oh BTW...
