LIVE from the Camino Santiago to Rome Part 1

All I can say is what an adventure! I've only walked a few stages backwards but it was a nice experience seeing smiling faces head on - those were the days when pilgrims didn't wear headphones or earplugs and actually stopped me to chat and ask if I had been to Santiago. May you be safe and...

    Memorable Climbs

Fonfría on the Madrid is definitely up there but also 2 stages on the Levante before Ávila, if I recall around Cebreros and San Martín de Valdeiglesias. There are two mountain pass crossings which I did in the pouring rain. I remember thinking, how amazing this would be in good weather. Despite...

Paulo Coelho's "The Pilgrimage" to be made into a Netflix movie

And he rehashes the same topics and in your face platitudes over and over again. Not my cup of tea.

Busy in the bars of Spain

World Cup July 2010, The Netherlands against Spain. I was staying in the municipal albergue in Castrojeriz and although I have absolutely no interest in football, the whole albergue was headed to the closest bar to watch the game (we were given permission to stay out late😂). I was the only one...

    The forum, 20 years on.

That's correct. After my first Camino July 2010 I stopped by the office but Ivar wasn't in. I finally did meet him years later at his previous location. I too have visited the Forum almost daily over the past 14 years and even had a short stint as a Moderator. Many members have come and gone...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Thanks for the information and pictures but as I mentioned in my previous post, I was referring to the current Compostela and the 100 km walking requirement. According to @sillydoll early on in the thread the 1963 version was for pilgrims walking at least 300 km. And the much older, historical...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Actually not. The Compostela in it's current form was only introduced in the 1990's along with the 100 km requirement (conveniently in Galicia). I don't doubt that it is important to the Spanish but once again, the Compostela is a modern day invention.

Walking from Santander to Gijon commencing 18 June but worried about accommodation...

Be prepared for rain. I've been on the Norte twice in June and it was wet. I had better weather in October. The coastline is known for its fickle weather. As far as accommodations is concerned, I've never had a problem but the last time I was on it was June 2022. Here in The Netherlands the...

    Too hot in August?

I've been on the Sanabrés in July and it was not overly hot but one never knows. Of course my ability to deal with heat might not aline with yours since I've walked from Valencia and Sevilla in July.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Was I sleeping when I received my x number of Compostelas? I've never paid for one. A tube is €2 but I've never gotten one, nor a distance certificate which (I may be wrong) you do pay for.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

The Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage from village to village, open to all, even locals out on their daily walk. It's not a thru-hike in the wilderness so a permit system is not the solution. The idea makes me cringe! A positive suggestion? One that comes to mind and which I fully endorse is...

Is this a thing I can do?

Disagree. My trail ail runners start wearing out after about 500 km and by 700 km they are definitely ready for the garbage. It doesn't matter if they are Salomon, Saucony or Merrell. In all cases they were almost new before starting a Camino. Last summer I started off with Saucony and after...

Great museum! Very near to it is a national archive about the Spanish Civil War. Worth a visit.

    Compostela: Electric Bikes Excluded?

I certainly hope that someone can clarify the language as it certainly sounds like no e-bikes no matter what. I'm personally all for the change but then again, I'd prefer that all cyclists stay off Camino paths and use the road instead. You may be a considerate cyclist but I've encountered way...

    Sanabres- Downhill to Ponte Ulla!

    Maybe I was sleepwalking? 😂

Right quad pain, ok to push through or something to be worried about?

If you showed a EU insurance card (on the back of mine is a EU flag and a telephone number for Euro cross) then you should not be charged. Medication is something else. By the way, tramadol is a much stronger painkiller than paracetamol or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory as Diclofenac as it...

LIVE from the Camino Luka on the Sanabrés

Hope you made it to Oseira safely and in descent health. I've stayed in the old albergue twice taking the tour in the afternoon but I hear that the albergue is much improved since the renovations. Ultreia.

    Sanabres- Downhill to Ponte Ulla!

My knees did fine too. I actually jogged down. I won't be doing that in the future.

    Sanabres- Downhill to Ponte Ulla!

Yeah but that was a serious downhill, one I've not forgotten. Switchbacks is indeed the way to go if the path or road is wide enough. I remember doing that during the downhill to the reservoir on the Primitivo. It just goes on and on! Who knows, I may have the same experience as you both this...
