    Seems like a bit of a generalisation to me - in fact it always keeps amazing me how easily people sometimes make generalisations. Anyway, it is not how I experienced travelling in Northern and Central Europe. And maybe it depends on the people you hang out with ;)

    I am not sure how these comments are related to the subject of fhis thread. And I am not sure how they are related to what I wrote. But let me clarify that also in EU countries hospitals, taxi drivers and hoteliers are expecting to get paid. So basically it is just not clear to me what point...

    Too bad. It could be a case of 'too many instructions, so people stop reading them ' ? In fact, I am just back from walking the Via Regia in Germany. In one albergue, the instructions were three pages long. The vicar - who showed me the albergue - gave them to me. but seemed rather embarrassed ...

    I am sorry, but I don't think this thead was so much about belittling people who are using booking companies or being judgemental about people using booking companies. It is unfortunate if that is your conclusion from this thread, but I am glad the camino seems to have been a good experience...

I said am against demanding or expecting that any oral or written instructions are given in English. Nobody said one should...

    Sorry, but I don't think I am being harsh. Words like breakfast and dinner (that were referred to) are basic phrases I think. More importantly, I think it is odd to expect or demand (which is what the OP did) that - when visiting a non-English speaking country - people communicate in English...

    It is a shame indeed that in Spain people communicate in Spanish. It is always a good idea (and perhaps polite) to learn some basics of the language that is spoken in the country you are visiting.
