I'm scheduled to fly into Lisbon May 17. According to the article that is not one of the strike days. However, I'm scheduled to fly out of Lisbon on June 11, which is one of the strike days. I'm not sure how to keep informed on this. If anyone on this feed gets updates, I would appreciate...
Yes, you can get a private room in some albergues but many don't have private rooms. I simply can't sleep in the room with other people. I stay in albergues when I can get a private room. It's great to be with other pilgrims. Some guidebooks indicate whether albergues have private rooms or not.
English is widely spoken in Portugal. I encountered only a couple of people who didn't speak English. It is taught in all of the schools from 1st grade through high school. Starting at 10 years of age, they teach a third language, aside from English and Portuguese. So they graduate with...
I'm so sorry to hear this, Peter. Thanks for sharing to remind all of us to take special caution. Lastly, it is good to hear that you won't let it define your Camino! I hope the remainder of your Camino brings all kinds of goodness into your life!
In 2017 I took metro to Matosinhos. I then walked along the ocean. At Vila do Conde I walked back to the central route. I'm planning to do this again this May.
I'm sorry to hear this--for your sake. And regrettably I bought Allianz for my Camino this coming May. Years ago I had a good experience with Allianz. They must have changed. I noticed that Forbes has recommendations for this kind of coverage. I looked at several of their recommendations and...
I've walked out of Leon. Waymarking was fine. Nothing sketchy. You will walk through an industrial area which, while not beautiful, was exceptionally clean. I do recommend, like others on this post, that you go by way of Mazarife.
I don't know those shoes. What I know is lots of folks will advise about shoes. I can tell you what I wear. But it won't be advice. I've seen just about every kind of shoe I can imagine on the Camino. A story. Once I was in REI shopping for something else for my upcoming Camino (I had already...
Just a couple more hints. If you want to walk to Vila Cha or Vila do Conde the first day and don't want to walk that many miles or K's, you can take Tram #1 to Foz do Douro (which would cut off about 6 K's, or you can take the metro to Matosinhos, from there cross the river bridge, turn left...
I'm planning to walk Camino Portuguese again in May. I walked it in 2017. I walked Coast from Porto to Vila Cha the first day and stayed at Sandra's (a small motel and restaurant that I recommend). There is also an albergue there. The second day I walked to Vila do Conde and turned inward and...
I have included this quote in a memoir I wrote. I resonate with it. For me, it has been both. I also know many people who have never gone on a walking pilgrimage who, nevertheless, have been on conscious pilgrimage in their lives--probably more profoundly than my own.
I totally agree. I had a similar experience with teenagers. It was just one of several encounters that blatantly confronted me with my own spirit of judgement. I just finished a post about how pilgrimage taught me about my judgmentalism. Thank you for your post here.
This is a topic dear to my heart even though I am not traditionally religious. I also happen to be an admirer of Richard Rohr. Knowing what I know about him, the last thing he would do is judge someone's motives for walking the Camino. I have walked Camino several times and each time I chose to...
In 2019 I got my halfway certificate in Sahagún in the Iglesia Señora de la Peregrina. There is a statue of the Virgin here dressed as a pilgrim. Parts of this church are from the thirteenth century. I believe this church is now basically a museum. As I remember there are walls/structures from...
I will never forget the morning after my first Camino, I got up and was moving slow. I thought, well Ron, of course, you are tired after walking so many days. And then I realized that if I had been walking that day I would have been filled with energy! Instead I was slightly depressed and...
I agree. And yes, the story is true about Martin's grandson. Martin Sheen wrote an article about this story. I read it before I went on my second Camino. I stayed, quite by accident, at the same country inn, and the woman who owns it told me her daughter had married Sheen's grandson. At the...
