The case for preserving the descent into Zubiri.

Indeed I am. You are correct that this exposure is near the bottom. I checked the data on my iphone, and it was taken here. It’s just coincidence that the dip of the limestone layer happens to coincide with the slope of the track.

The case for preserving the descent into Zubiri.

Of course I'm making a big assumption based on the word 'repair'. However I suspect that the hill out of Linzoain would have resembled some of the exposures in my pictures. The underlying geology is identical. Perhaps some 'old timers' can remember its state before that was 'fixed up'..

The case for preserving the descent into Zubiri.

To some extent, yes. Once again it comes down to moving tectonic plates, and in the case of the rocks west of Astorga, the collision of supercontinents 400 million years ago. Here's part of the relevant chapter. This might not be easily comprehensible as some information is assumed from earlier...

The case for preserving the descent into Zubiri.

A recent post by @Kirkie in another older thread about the descent has prompted me to make this post. In it she tells us this: "I wrote to turismo.web@navarra.es The reply I got just now - I quote: Good morning, as you say, there is a part of the Way on the descent to Zubiri that is not in good...

    Is the Camino too crowded?

Trecile, if you’re still in Luquin when you read this, please remember me to Tiago. He was exceptionally kind to me last year when I got sick. Tell him I’ll be coming through in a month!

    One Napoleon but two variants......

Sorry, I completely misunderstood your post. I was referring to the road from Col du Lepoeder down into Roncesvalles avoiding the short cut through the forest. And no, I didn’t take the path short cut before Orisson.

    One Napoleon but two variants......

I've always biked the road into Roncesvalles and it it is exhilarating.

Is it okay to have no plan for the first Camino? 🌙

Nika is planning to start at the end of the third week in May. Sure, the Francés has always been busy at the beginning of May, this year ridiculously so. But surely the big wave be will be long gone by the time she starts?

    That infamous descent into Zubiri

2 'likes' appeared today for my postings on this thread, which I'd forgotten I'd made. After all the terrible weather pilgrims have experienced recently, I'm surprised no-one mentioned it, because it must have been bloody awful in a downpour. For anyone interested, here's a couple more pics from...

    Overcrowded Camino Frances

I do hope that you will post a 'Live from the Camino' thread about your experience on this route, @chechakoman. Last year I diverted on a round trip by bike from Burgos to Covarrubias. I can highly recommend the Pension Galin in that lovely little town, seen here at the end of the street...

    Spring has sprung?

I mean the one with the distant scarp.

@Juanma, impressive vista. From where did you take this picture?

N135 Puerto de Erro to Zubiri

I’ve often been tempted to give you all a geology lecture about the descent to Zubiri, but have held back for obvious reasons. I have however waxed lyrical about it in my almost-ready-to-go book about the geology of the camino. Zubiri gets a chapter of its own. I’ll give you a brief rundown in...

N135 Puerto de Erro to Zubiri

With great patience, and on foot. For you, it would have come at the end of a long day, and that would definitely add to the stress. For me, I had plenty of time.

N135 Puerto de Erro to Zubiri

Look, I'm a bicigrino, and the first time on the descent to Zubiri I took the road being aware of the track's reputation. Last year I walked down the trail with my loaded bike because I wanted to look at the geology. The track is fine for the most part except for relatively frequent short...

    Path just before Maneru

The path shows up clearly on Google maps.

    Memorable Places

Allow some time to walk up to the castle in Castrojeriz. The views in every direction are iconic.

    Zubiri or Larrasoana?

I stayed at Albergue Rio Arga in Zubiri. I had a private room, (very comfortable), so I can't comment on the dorm. There are food options close by. Very well situated by the river, just across the bridge. I would stay again.

LIVE from the Camino Sarria to Santiago winter Camino

Such an interesting journey and thread, Janet. “Live from the Camino” it certainly was. Safe journey home.

    SJPP to Logroño

Alwyn, I’m going with Bradipus on this: 100 miles.
