    Why 100km for compostela

There was no mention of any 100km minimum distance in the Confraternity of St James guide which I carried on my first Camino - which would have been a very strange omission. No one I met along the way or on arrival in Santiago mentioned any such rule either. And in a thread discussing a proposed...

    cell service Sarria-Santiago

Yes. Mobile phone coverage on the main Caminos is very good. You are unlikely to see any dead spots in that section.

Walking to O Cebreiro from bus stop in Pedrafita do Cebreiro

I read a local news article last year which reported that a local school had signposted a walking route from Pedrafita to O Cebreiro using existing tracks. I have not heard of anyone actually using the route but it sounded like an interesting option. Thread 'New walking route from Pedrafita to O...

    Why 100km for compostela

I have seen posts online over the years from people who walked the final 100km in two or three days and then encountered similar problems at the pilgrim office. For a pilgrimage where walking is considered so integral to the whole business it is surprising that those of us who actively enjoy...

    Why 100km for compostela

There was no 100km minimum rule at the time of my first Camino in 1990. I believe the rule was introduced in time for the 1993 Holy Year which was heavily promoted by the Xunta. The rule requiring two stamps per day is a later addition. Volunteers in the pilgrim office have some discretion in...

Do some people not get stamps?

You need to ask for a vicarie pro inscription on your Compostela. More about it in this thread: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/how-to-get-compostela-noted-for-camino-walked-in-memory-deceased-relative-in-vicarie-pro.81620/

Finally - real food in Santiago!!!

Shortly before they started to have fingers?

Do some people not get stamps?

My understanding has always been that albergues and the earlier refugios are there to assist pilgrims on their pilgrimage to the tomb of the Apostle in Santiago. I do not see any essential link between a journey to the shrine of the Apostle and the collection of stamps and souvenir certificates...

Do some people not get stamps?

Me too. I no longer ask for a Compostela but I still carry a credencial mainly for access to pilgrim albergues.

Do some people not get stamps?

Like @trecile and @Peterexpatkiwi - these days I only usually get my credencial stamped at the albergues where I stay. No interest in asking for a Compostela and no great interest in sellos as souvenirs either.

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

Gorseinon cycle path again. Orchids out this time of year - very similar to one that @VNwalking posted yesterday! And honeysuckle - scent so strong that I could smell it 30 seconds before seeing it.

What “baggage” do you wish you had not brought on your second Camino?

I have occasionally added 10km or more to my walking day to be sure of leaving some specially irritating person behind me.

What an exciting time to be a pilgrim!!

I'm one of those who struggles with the scale of growth on the main Caminos. This year looks set to have 100x the numbers of my first year on a Camino. As a solitary and introvert by nature that is hard for me to adjust to and I'm not sure that those who have come to the Caminos very recently...

Botafumeiro used at today's pilgrim mass

A recent message on Facebook from Father Manny. The Botafumeiro was used today at the pilgrim mass in the cathedral.

    Caminho without a phone

My early Camino experience was very solitary. Perhaps 30 other pilgrims encountered in total over 800km. I was very happy with that level of contact. Walking the Portugues recently and seeing more than double that number pass by in the time it took to drink a little water and eat some chocolate...

Monbus from Fisterra to Santiago de Compostela

Usually only three or four weeks. The Monbus site is only taking bookings at the moment until the end of June.

    Caminho without a phone

I walked my first Camino from SJPDP to Santiago with no mobile phone (and no internet access at any point along the way either). Not through choice - simply because for all practical purposes they didn't exist at the time. These days I carry a mobile phone and am very glad to do so. In fact I...

    Halfway point credentials

I think you may be confusing credencial, Compostela, and other certificates. The credencial is the "pilgrim passport" on which you receive stamps along your journey and which gives access to pilgrim albergues. The Compostela certificate is only issued on arrival in Santiago if you meet the...

    Partially unplugging from the world

On the main Caminos mobile phone coverage is very good and you will very rarely be out of signal range between towns and villages. Even on the Via de la Plata dead zones were extremely rare. Even so I usually have my phone in airplane mode and with GPS disabled to save power but have my camera...
