When I did the Portuguese Coastal May last year I flew into Porto, went to the Cathedral, then walked out along the river front to Matosinhos where I stayed the first night in a private hostel. I walked to Val de Conde the next day. I completed the walk to Santiago in 14 days.
Gear is personal but here is what I brought when I walked the Portuguese Coastal May 2023. I was fortunate with good weather and I had only two days with light rain.
30L Osprey pack so I could bring it as carry-on on Ryanair. I bought cheap hiking poles at a Decathlon store in Porto...
I haven't read all this thread so may be repeating.
When I arrived in Santiago May last year I went on a wonderful tour up onto the cathedral roof...it was a clear day. I stumbled across a sign for the guided tour when I went through the museum door to the left of the Cathedral's main front.
I got a taxi from Las Grandas (a hotel 5km before Grandas De Salime) to O Cadavo (60 km) for 60 Euro. A 10 euro discount as he brought another pilgrim the 5km to Grandas De Salime. He was also doing baggage transfer.
By the way, it was snowing for most of the drive.
@James1 I walked from Campiello to Berducedo via Hospitales. Views on the way up then into cloud for 2 hours. I found the descent challenging due to rocky and steep trails. Stayed in Alberque Marquez, clean and quiet.
Yesterday walking from Berducedo, I stopped early at hotel Las Grandas as i...
I am walking the Primitivo and I just came down with a stomach bug, I think food poisoning from a sandwich I had yesterday. So I booked into a hotel between Bersecudo and Grandas de Salime.
Wondering if anyone has experience taking a taxi and rough cost per km?
I may have to skip walking for a...
@Thomas1 I am in Albergue Herminia, across the street from you. I was energetic today and walked 32.5 km from Salas....a lovely walk, especially from Tineo over the mountain to Campiello...great views. It was chilly...ok when moving but I felt the cold when I stopped. Yes, the final approx 4km...
Yes, weather is changeable. I walked from Roca Madre to Salas yesterday. I was ok walking with a long sleeve top and puffy jacket, but once I stopped in Salas at a bar for food and sitting outside I could feel the cold wind, and put on a second top.
@Thomas1 I am following you closely as I just started today from Oviedo. My intention was Grado but my legs said otherwise and I stopped at Paladin (19.5km) - Vila Palatina with dorm and private rooms. I am staying in a private room as I have jet lag and my sleep pattern is unpredictable. You...
I am on the train to Oviedo, starting my Primitivo this weekend. I am wearing trail runners, Brooks Cascadia 16. I used the same pair last September walking to Finisterre and Muxia. I found trail runners worked out good.
I walked the Portuguese this time last year. It was my first Camino. I carried a light weight sleeping bag liner.
Worked fine. I wore extra clothes in bed if chilly at night. So suggest leaving your sleeping bag behind.
If you don't have a sleeping bag liner you can buy one at the Decathlon...
I walked the Portuguese Coastal from Porto to Santiago during May 2023. I only made a reservation in advance for my first night near Porto. After that I booked either the night before or same day. I stayed in a mix of hostels, rooms in private houses, and small hotels. Never had a problem...
