For me, the joy of the Camino is the freedom of knowing that I’m carrying all my basic needs with me, and all I have to do today is walk, and take care of my body. No preconceived notions of what works for me, because life on the Camino is not my “normal”, thus there is no reason to believe...
1 night in SJPP is plenty for me. I flew into Paris and took the train to SJPP, checked into the Pilgrim’s Center, stayed overnight and was ready to head out the next morning. I only went as far as Orisson the first day.
I use the smaller front zipper pocket on my Fanny pack for the days cash (both bills and coins). The main compartment holds my phone, passport in a baggie, lipstick and the Brierley pages for the day.
Morton’s neuroma, reared its ugly head on my first Camino over 10 years ago. My podiatrist recommended insoles with a pad, just behind the ball of my foot. That works for me.
The type of shoe, didn’t make any difference to Morton, but my feet seem to be happiest in Hoka. The cushioning...
Welcome to the group!! I am in the “talk to a podiatrist” camp. If you have Medicare, you can see one every 91 days for toenail clipping and it is covered. I have been going for years, and with my supplemental policy, I pay nothing. Each visit, my calluses are checked and offered a...
I carry a water bottle in my cargo pants pocket, or in a pocket of my Macabi skirt, whichever I happen to be wearing.
FYI, in another pocket, I carry a small amount of toilet paper and a small plastic bag (think produce department in grocery store). This is so that I am prepared to leave...
I am planning (hoping) to complete VdlP from Merida, Sept 2024. Walked from Sevilla to Merida in 2017. Went back to finish in 2020, but everything closed down, and I returned to the states. Dealing with some health issues right now, but the plan is fall, 2024. Third time is a charm???
I claim to be a walker and not a hiker, as I associate hiking with uncertain footing. I have walked many a well defined trail in National Parks, some with steep inclines/declines. I’m walking until I have to focus on where I’m stepping and/or boulder scrambling. I have done a small amount...
That may well be. I have my ticket so it’s taken care of. The point I was making was this situation is so fluid that what works today may not work tomorrow. In fact, what makes sense this minute may no longer be relevant an hour from now.
I decided to return to the states and snagged the last seat on the last AA flight out of Spain until further notice. US citizens are exempt from the travel ban from Europe, so I thought “no big deal”. BUT, if people aren’t flying, the planes aren’t flying. I didn’t think of that. So much...
I flew with a friend into Madrid on 4 March and then directly to Gran Canaria. On 8 March we flew into Malaga and began an Immersion Spanish class on 9 March. At that point we had no regrets that we had come. Each day the news becomes more grim and finally this morning we admitted that if...
The same thing happened to me in Australia. I was only passing thru from the states to NZ. I had to go thru security, and my fold up scissors that have flown many miles in multiple countries were confiscated in Melbourne.
I admire you so much @Anniesantiago for the way that you are approaching this challenge. It is a special blessing that your Camino is perfectly timed so that you can carefully weigh your options, and return home having made your well thought out final decision that will be right for you.
If you’ve never used it, I suggest you try it at home and see how you like it. I did not like the first one I bought because it stuck to my body and didn’t allow the freedom of movement that I need to sleep well. My grand daughter Loved it. I bought a second one and I like it so well that...
I don’t think my reasons fit into a box, although I think they are widely shared. There is something so freeing to wake up every morning thinking “all I have to do today is walk, avoid physical injury, and maintain a level of cleanliness to not be a menace”. The fact that I do this while...
