    Please review my packing List

The list looks good. I’d be thinking about 2 things: how much does it all weigh and is my backpack too big? My guess is you might be able to get away with. 38 l. pack or thereabouts. If the bag is too big, the weight will sit too low on your back. Have you tried, say, a 10 mile walk with the...

Etiquette/ what to wear at churches

I’m Catholic and I also plan to attend many masses on the way. I’m wearing shorts—not going to buy long pants until the weather forces it on me.

    Overweight on the Frances?

Just to toss in a couple more ideas. I'm a fan of the "Hiking Rev" on YouTube. He did the Pacific Crest Trail at 67, after he retired, and he has a ton of good advice, most of which is applicable to the Camino. I'm 70, so I'm especially careful when it comes to the joints. Anyhow, here's a...

    Overweight on the Frances?

It’s realistic. Start slow and you’ll get there! Hike your own hike. Buen Camino

    Pilgrim in spirit?

A difficult question. I’ve done two Caminos, and this year’s will be the longest, from Le Puy to Muxía I hope. At 70 I wonder if the knees and ankles will hold up. I’ve been trying to answer for myself what “pilgrimage” means. Best I can do is that it is a journey to a holy place that both...

    How cold in October?

All the advice below on layering is excellent. I’m starting in Le Puy on Aug. 24 and finishing in Muxia in mid-November so may pick up some layers, if necessary, when I get into SJPP or Spain.

OBSOLETE COVID THREAD Documents Required upon entry?

I have some of the same questions. We are from California and will be doing the Via Podiensis and then the Frances. So if you arrive in Spain on foot, after a month in France, do you need to fill out the SpTH form? What I'm getting from the website is that this applies only to air travelers...

    Yet another sleeping bag question!

My friend and I are planning to leave Le Puy on August 23 and arrive in Muxia in time to fly back to California on November 16. I am asking myself the same questions you are. I would love not to have to pack a bag between Le Puy and SJPP. Will probably take an ultra light quilt though. No...

    how many pilgrims this year...

I hoping to walk from Le Puy in 2022, September and October, and then the Frances. Any word about how the Via Podiensis is doing? Are masks ever required along Spanish routes? in the albergues?

    Interesting Advice ...

Are your feet used to walking that far in Crocs?

I am not a "Camino pilgrim"

A very interesting thread. It captures a very typical Camino conversation, I think. It starts when someone asks, "Why are you walking the Camino?" and among strangers who have gotten friendly, it's a very natural question to ask. The safest answer, and one I certainly have no trouble with, is...

I am not a "Camino pilgrim"

Non-religous walkers certainly seem to be the majority.

Walking the Camino from September to October

I'm hoping to go from St. Jean to Muxia and back again, finishing in St. Jean around Halloween. So I'm especially interested in most of what these posts already discuss: open v. closed albergues and weather conditions. I'm wondering about hitting a really big snowfall between Roncevalles and St...

    Food Poisoning

What to avoid on the Camino? Especially when it gets hot? One year a friend I was with got food poisoning from a bad bocadillo. One year I got it from a cream puff. The doctor in Leon told me to avoid any pastry with dairy (I suppose, other than baked in butter). Does anyone have any thoughts?

How many km a day at the Meseta ?

    Thanks. Going into my notebook.

How many km a day at the Meseta ?

Will be starting in a couple of days from SJPP. I'm from the hot country of Fresno, CA, and one friend who has done the Camino, tells me the Meseta is a lot like home. I've done a little of the Meseta before, from Leon to Astorga--and the Astorga stage was, for me, the hardest of the walk...

    Training for the Camino

I just love to bike ride--builds up the quads and muscles around the knee, where I have trouble. But walking is the real ticket, I think.

    Training for the Camino

Two years ago, I went from Leon to Santiago, because I did not have enough time to do the entire Camino Frances. But this year, will do it, starting at the end of May. The first time, I had major blister trouble. That actually turned into a unique and valuable part of the pilgrimage, though it...

    The Nature of Pilgrimage

"We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." A pilgrim is a person who is trying to come home for the first time.
