I agree with several of these!! Casa de Carolina and Quinta da Quinhas were both great, as well as O Lugar de Jesus.
Another suggestion is La Cala Inn, in Oia. Amazing location on the coast and next to the monastery, and Tanya is a fabulous and generous host who prepared such an amazing evening...
I've walked a bunch of Caminos and while I do love the connections I've made and some social interaction, I'm also an introvert and the alone time I get on a long walk is really important to me. I now walk a mix of more popular routes and more quiet ones, and almost always in the summer (this is...
@Bad Pilgrim I'm not sure yet, so many options! Back in 2019, when I re-walked the first half of the Norte, I said to myself- "I want to come back and walk this route every 5 years" (I'd also walked it in 2015). Well, it's been 5 years, and I was thinking it could be fun to walk Irun to Ribadeo...
So excited to see you take on this route! It's been on my radar and I *might* find myself walking there this summer, we'll see. In the meantime, I hope your back pain doesn't make the walking difficult. Buen Camino, my Norte friend!
Last summer on the Sanabres I had a day of walking in clouds of little gnats/bugs (the worst I've ever experienced!). During the walk I passed an older Spanish couple out for a stroll, and they gave me a bunch of leaves to fan the bugs away from my face as I walked. At one point I had it tucked...
This IS interesting to mull over. I walked from Salamanca last July/August, and was often the only pilgrim on the route/in my albergues. There were others out there, but not many. I think, as @Arctic_Alex suggested, the heat of summer must deter pilgrims quite a bit (understandably!); while...
If you take the Litoral (red), you will pass right by a sea glass beach!! Praia dos Cristais, in that upper left corner of your map. It was a highlight of the route for me!
Thanks @Purple Backpack ! I was just coming here to share the videos, in case that helps. The Vasco was such a great experience... though in late June 2022 I didn't encounter any other pilgrims. But great albergues and a beautiful walk! For the most part it was very well way-marked, and I never...
Great to know, and very interesting about not being on Gronze (I always wondered why Izarbide wasn't on there as well!!). I now tend to rely on Gronze when researching/planning a Camino, so I'd also think that it would be a great place to "advertise"! That being said, even without being on...
I wanted to visit a thermal bath in Ourense, but it was so, so hot the afternoon I was there that I just couldn't pull myself together enough to do it! But I know many pilgrims do and I don't think it will be too hard to figure out... the hospitalero at the albergue in Ourense gave me maps and...
I walked from Salamanca to Santiago in July/August last summer... and honestly, it wasn't that bad! The first couple of days were hot, and maybe I was in a good "pocket" of weather overall. My morning into Ourense was okay but the afternoon was HOT and I took a true siesta in the albergue...
This is probably not a unique tip/idea, but it reminds me of the year that I arrived in Santiago with an extra day on my hands. I didn't need more time to explore the city (I'd been there several times before) and my feet were itching to walk. So, bright and early in the morning I headed out for...
Hi Lauren, welcome and Buen Camino! I know you said you'd be asking specific questions in future posts, but because this caught my eye now, I wanted to pass along a video that you might find useful, from Jeremiah who posts as 'Camino Guide' on YouTube (he's a great person and his videos are so...
I spent a long time with that planner and still find it confusing and cumbersome (and will also eagerly look forward to hearing from anyone who's discovered the key to navigating it! In the meantime, Doug, I may have to try your technique)
Also, I only linked to the main website... you'll find...
Seeing this thread reminded me that this walk is high on my list, and I'm considering it for next summer. I've spent some time on the website, trying to make sense of it all and piece together stages/accommodation options, and just now went over to see if anything was new. And maybe others are...
Others have already provided excellent tips, so all I'm doing is echoing what's been said. But I walked the Baztan this past July and really enjoyed it! I stayed at Andy's place- it gets mixed reviews on gronze.com but I had a good experience, I thought Andy was kind, generous, and engaging. I...
Peter, I'm so sorry to hear that your Rota Vicentina plans have been canceled (well, hopefully just delayed). Hoping you'll find your way to this path soon!
I walked this route (from Porto Covo to Sagres) in April of this year and it was the best 8-day stretch of walking I've ever had. Just incredible scenery every single day! (I also had near perfect weather, so that helped too). Enjoy this walk, it's a fabulous one!
I use a single, wooden hiking stick for every Camino and I love it! For my first Camino, I bought a stick at one of the shops in St Jean Pied de Port (and was happy to have it for the Pyrenees crossing). On every other Camino, I've found a stick as I'm walking, and it's become a fun tradition...
