Most useful:
A4 grip lock high density freezer bags. Keeps everything neat in your rucksack. Change of clothes in each one; squeeze all the air out and seal. All your bits stay nice and dry.
Most useless:
Headphones, never used once as I like all the sounds around me.
TrailSmart is an excellent app. There is a small charge for the offline map but the gps route is very accurate. It also has a lot of information on distances, terrain, accommodation and restaurants which help you plan your walk. We have found it invaluable on the Lycian Way and Cappadocia.
I quite like the idea of a team following me around with my own portable toilet. For that money, that is the least I'd expect. Oh, and rose petals sprinkled in front of me as I walk, to protect my delicate nose from malodorous fellow walkers.
O.K. I hold my hands up, I'm English. I take an electric kettle and teabags. It is always a balance between what I can physically carry and what do I need (unless you are someone who takes a dainty day-pack and has your luggage transported to your next stop). Even then my backpack is 7.5 kilos...
