    Thoughts after my first Camino

Thank you for this. Well, the best news is that my tendonitis was completely gone and I didn't have any issues with it the entire time. I was, however, very careful when going down parts of the Camino where there were lots of rocks and stones coupled with a steep descent. I relied on my trekking...

    Language on the Camino

Well, I speak 7 languages, and even the Europeans were impressed. :) I walked with Italians, all of whom could get by in English and a little Spanish but I'm grateful that I'm fluent in Italian. On the CF I got the impression that many hospitaleros and restaurant/bar staff were somewhat...

    Thoughts after my first Camino

I returned about a month ago from my first-ever Camino. Wow, what an incredible experience! I am so grateful to the many people on this forum who helped with advice, tips, encouragement, and practical information before my journey. What follows is a list of memories, in no particular order: 1...

    Couldn't do it

Haha, well I'd be glad to enjoy a good German beer (is there any other?) with you, @ewy . :) Buen Camino whenever you decide it's right to go.

    Couldn't do it

What great advice from all of these seasoned veterans! @ewy , welcome to the forum and may I also add my voice in saying I'm sad about your experience, too. I'm a total newbie and have been preparing and getting excited for my first Camino (which starts in 9 days!) for a little more than 6...

    Albergue in Roncesvalles

Thanks, I also booked ahead, I corresponded with someone there and he said some days are already full up, so I didn't want to take chances. Even with 200 beds on offer, the place can fill up.

    Roncesvalles

I actually just tried to make a reservation there and after the credit card transaction failed 3 times in a row for unknown reasons, I phoned and was told by the very nice gentleman that I shouldn't worry about a reservation given that they have 200 beds. :) First Camino lesson learned: don't...

Nervous wreck looking to start mid-August 2017

Welcome to the forum from another Northern VA-er. :)I'm leaving for Spain two weeks from today on my very first Camino. This forum is an amazing resource and others, more experienced than I, have given you great advice and tips. Do follow them! I'm a little bit anxious, but not as much afraid...

Be careful booking bus on Alsa app

That's great! I've taken buses many times in Spain and I *usually* didn't buy ahead of time, but this trip is a little different for me so I booked ahead just to be on the safe side. I've been told that summer is a busy season and I'm anxious to get to SJPdP on time.

Be careful booking bus on Alsa app

I also booked through them and am planning to print everything out. Don't want to take any chances.

    Don't sweat the packing list

As another famous Irishman (Oscar Wilde) said, "Life is too important to be taken seriously."

    Don't sweat the packing list

I thought it was "men sweat, women glisten." :p

    Don't sweat the packing list

Thank you, it's a very good list. There's a typo in the first line, however. The expression is "...poring over," not "pouring" (unless you're talking about wine, water, etc.). :D I'm glad you recommended Icebreaker (though, being Kiwis, you might be a *bit* biased). I purchased several items...

    Mean, uncompromising mind

LOL! :p My wife and I are fond of that expression, but we add something at the end, i.e. "It's like OCD, but the letters are in the right order, like they should be!"

    Corazón Puro message

This really seems to be a shame, the new establishment appears to be trading off Istvan and Barbara's long-established business name and reputation. But for their family's medical issue, they'd still be there running it. I wonder if the new owners would consider either changing the name or...

    Yikes, people

I'd like to say that in addition to finding tons of helpful advice here (both practical information as well as "you can do it" pep talks), I find the tone here to be wonderfully and refreshingly supportive and kind. I gave up Facebook entirely for Lent this year and I only glance at it 10% of...

    Non-thinking Pilgrims taking Short-cut!

I marked the relevant spot in my Brierley guide! :-) Maybe just to practice my Spanish, I'll strike up a conversation with the farmer and tell him I'm on his side. :-)

    Well this sucks-possible stress fracture

Well, I just came back from my podiatrist's office, and after viewing my MRI, she confirmed that I had peroneal tendinitis, which is a lot better (I think, anyway) than a stress fracture. In addition to the standard RICE protocol, she recommended an orthotic for my shoe and physical therapy...

LIVE from the Camino Buy earplugs if the snoring annoys you...

I don't have a problem with the bed size, I'm only 5'4". :) But I am thinking I might just try to hit the bed early so I'm asleep before any "roncadores/as." I did a sleep study earlier this year and apparently fell asleep in 6 minutes, and that's with all of those ridiculous wires attached to...

LIVE from the Camino Buy earplugs if the snoring annoys you...

Thank you, I do have earplugs already in my backpack, ready to go, courtesy of my wife. ;) I've found, though, that earplugs only reduce ambient noise, they don't eliminate it. In my experience, they don't reduce noise enough to allow me to sleep, but we shall see. You might say I'll just "play...
