How long is a piece of string ?

Hi Charles I'm also in AU. I gather you mean from Le Puy to SJPdP? If yes then your estimate is about right ( if you're doing 25-30 plus a few rest days ) Nigel

Le Puy (or Geneva) to SJPdP in Autumn

It will still be pretty cold in April mate, and you may get snow etc when you are on the Massif Central area. Also a lot of accommodation is closed in the off season. It is a good walk with plenty of towns. I much prefer Spain over France for its friendliness and you will notice the difference...

    Misc Questions Le Puy Route

Hi there Monica, I did SJPdP to SdC in 2016 and LePuy to SdC in Aug/Sept 2017. here is my two cents worth: You will definitely benefit from being able to speak some french. It will be difficult if you don't speak any at all. You can pick up a Compostella (passport) from the Pilgim shop in the...

    March 2018 start advice

Hi there I dont think the track ever actually closes - but at that time of year I would expect very few hikers and even fewer Gites or other accommodation to be open. You will also have some pretty cold days - especially in the first week or so climbing up to and across the Massif Central. I (a...

    Le Puy Route Certificate?

A certificate is issued for completing a pilgrimage - i.e. reaching the tomb of St Jean. Minimum distance is 100km walking (180km cycling I think).

    Average daily budget

If the Gites are in a town that has a campground, then the Gite owner normally directs you to there (which is fair as then they are not affecting the camp ground's business). In smaller villages where there is no campground they are usually quite accommodating. Especially when their beds are...

LIVE from the Camino Warning - Diversions on Cahors to Montquc Route

Hi all I walked through there a couple of days ago. I took the diversion and others went on the original paths. Those that took the original path did not notice any dangers. There was just one "worm" which is actually a caterpillar dangling on a thread looking to hitch a ride from an...

    Surprise Chemin!

Free camping (not camp ground camping) is the best! No snoring - just birds to wake you. There are some rules that you should follow such as: Leave it as you found it - take away your rubbish including toilet paper. If camping on farm land, ask the land owner (farmer) if you can camp on their...

    Surprise Chemin!

Yeah there are some great airfares at the moment! Try the first part of the LePuy route ( hilly but the most scenic ). You would be able to get to Cahors (354km) at that pace. I am doing that route at the same time - but 'free camping'. Look out for an orange tent! Good luck Kellymac Buen Chemin

Walking the Le Puy route in Feb/March

It really depends on your fitness and experience hiking in Feb/March weather, but being 60 will not be an impediment. This route is very popular with French retirees.

Accommodation from Le Puy to StJPdP

Gidday Mimioldie The French tend to book ahead - usually just one day. Gites anywhere from Euro30 - Euro45 - a sensible budget is about Euro60 per day I think (including lunch, pharma etc..) I have been watching youtube videos from Chris Atkinson here...

    Walk or bus to Finisterre

Yes, definitely walk to Finisterre. I found the countryside is nothing different from what you will have experienced before Santiago.... but that first glimpse of the sea followed by a barefoot walk on the sand into the town is definitely worth the extra few days! For me, finishing at the sea...

Le Puy (or Geneva) to SJPdP in Autumn

Wow, that's exactly the info I needed - thanks Kitsambler (for all your comments throughout the forum). I will move my dates to earlier. I LOVE camping in the rain (as long as the rain stays on the outside!). I don't love packing up a wet tent and carrying the extra weight.

    Sleeping outdoors

Hi Milly2B I LOVE free camping! Here are some tips that come to mind: The biggest issue I found, is being able to comfortably carry the extra weight in your backpack. My camping equipment is nothing more than a lightweight 1 person tent and an air mattress. This adds 1.9kg to what I usually...

Le Puy (or Geneva) to SJPdP in Autumn

Thanks Thornley, What do you think about walking through France during October / November months. Is it sensible at that time of year? (...for someone used to Melbourne weather?) BTW, great list of past pilgrimages in your profile! - will add them all to my wish list.

Le Puy (or Geneva) to SJPdP in Autumn

Hi everyone Thanks you so much for all the info I have from your Le Puy threads. I am looking to walk from either Geneva or Le Puy starting at the end of September 2017 - through to SJPdP. I can not find much information about walking at that time of year and am wondering if it will be too...
