New Pilgrim - French Route

This is an off topic question but one I thought about while walking this AM. Has anyone had issues with taking their trekking poles on the plane if you don't check your bag. Am flying into Madrid and I was told by a friend to not check my bag as it may/will get lost. Thoughts?

Traveling from Atlanta Georgia

Thank you for your advice After checking out Madrid and Barcelona, the train travel time seems like a better option as far as getting to Leon the quickest. The waiting to begin will be at an all time high by then as I can barely wait to begin now.

Traveling from Atlanta Georgia

Planning on starting the Camino in Leon this October and wondered where I should fly into from Atlanta Georgia, Barcelona or Madrid or someWhere else? And then how to get to Leon from there?
