Returning Home & Preventing a Bedbug Infestation!

My re-entry routine is to leave a change of clothes at a friends place. She has a sauna. I leave every, shoes, pack, electronics, passport, etc. in there with the sauna turned on. Failing a sauna, a dark plastic bag with the large non-dryer items and place in a sun spot, greenhouse? Or use a...

Afraid of top bed without fence

A group of us met on the train to SJPdP, formed a Camino family and walked to Burgos. One fellow drank way too much that night and fell out of his top bunk. He cracked his skull and had permanent hearing loss and that ended his Camino. A couple of ideas: Take a strong line to tie back and forth...

    Taxi services Pamplona to SJPDP

Hi, yes, bus from Pamplona to Ronsevalles and then get a taxi at Ronsevalles to St JPdP. Sorry, I forgot the name of the bus company. I think it is Alsa that sells tickets to St JPdP, but it was the bus company in the booth to the left of Alsa in the main bus terminal, that goes to Roncesvalles.

    Taxi services Pamplona to SJPDP

We tried to buy a bus ticket Pamplona to SJPdP at 9 in the morning for the noon bus but it was sold out. The ticket seller suggested we bus to Ronsevalles €6 and get a taxi there to SJPdP €50 as it was much cheaper. You buy the ticket (leaves at 1:30 or maybe a bit later) from the bus driver...

If, on your way to SJPdP, you have to stay in Pamploma, could you not stay at an albergue?

Hot flashes and sleeping bag liners?

One woman I met took a sleeping bag liner and cut it open to lie flat then sewed it to a light weight down quilt. Depending in the weather or her body temp, she could have down side up or turn it to liner side up. I thought it was a brilliant solution. Having had bed bugs I prefer to be inside...

Sleeping bag or liner in May?

Hi, I always take a cotton/silk liner and a very compact lightweight down throw to give me a choice. Since you will likely be sleeping on a mattress, you don’t need to worry about insulation under you and the sleep liner, especially if it has some silk provides some warmth. Another option is...

Tips and Experiences in Dealing with Bed Bugs During Travel

Not everyone reacts to bedbugs (I do and have) which is how the little vermin travel too,— with unsuspecting transporters. I have a 're-entry' procedure. I have a bag of clean clothes to change into in a bag at my sisters. When coming home I phone her and she drops the bag off at a friends who...

Umbrella for sun and rain - buy good quality (expensive) or just use a cheap one?

I have used this Fulton umbrella which folds to a small size and weighs 86 grams which is half the weight of the Gossamer.. In Canada it costs $36 ($27US$) . I have usd it for at least 5 years and it is still working. I do like the clip for hands free that Gossamer sells...

    The Laundromat is my friend

My second favorite place in Santiago de Compostela (the square in front of the cathedral watching everyone arrive has to be #1) is a laundromat! The owner plays wonderful music—he loves Leonard Cohen—the place is nicely decorated giving you a cathedral-like sense of peace and calm, and there is...

how to pack for Sept-November walk

I have walked a few times in late September into October and early November and suggest a few things to consider: - a colourful silk scarf. Silk keeps you warm, is lightweight and looks good either on the trail or in a restaurant. Plus you can wrap it a few times for a makeshift Covid mask. -...

LIVE from the Camino Me and my umbrella - envy of the Camino

I always take a small collapsible umbrella. I find umbrellas better than a hood as hoods and some hats make it difficult to hear, plus I have big hair and my hair has its own mind and doesn’t take to hats. I use a Fulton Aerolite2 86 grams https://www.fultonumbrellas.ca/product/aerolite-2/ and...

    Take clothes or buy them?

I too like to purchase an outfit at the end to wear home. It is a treat to have a new outfit to fit the new body. But for hiking, I like to field test my clothes before going. Do they chaff? Can they drip dry indoors overnight? Do they smell of sweat even after washing? Do they shrink? Can...
